5월 14일 수요일, 앵커리지 수잔 라프랑 스(Suzanne LaFrance) 시장과 시청 관 계자들이 아시아계 미국인 및 태평양 섬 주민 유산의 달(AAPI Heritage Month)을 맞아 앵커리지 한인회관을 방문했다. 이 번 방문은 라프랑스 시장이 추진하고 있 는 소통 활동의 일환으로, 한인 커뮤니 티와 직접 만나 시정 비전을 공유하고 지역사회의 목소리를 듣는 뜻깊은 자리 였다.

행사는 앤디 권(Andy Kwon) 앵커리지 한인회장의 따뜻한 환영 인사로 시작되 었다. 권 회장은 알래스카 내 한인사회 의 역사와 현황을 간단히 소개하며, 현 재 알래스카에는 8,000명 이상의 한인 이 거주하고 있고, 350개 이상의 한인 비즈니스와 25개 이상의 교회가 활발히 활동하고 있음을 전했다. 또한 앵커리 지 한글학교, 한인 시니어 아카데미, 알 래스카 한국문화센터, 주 앵커리지 대한 민국 총영사관 등 다양한 한인 기관들 이 협력하며 지역사회를 이끌고 있다고 강조했다.

이어 라프랑스 시장은 자신의 행정팀 이 중점적으로 추진하고 있는 주요 정 책들을 소개했다. 그녀는 앵커리지의 도 로, 산책로, 공원을 보다 안전하게 만들 고, 주택 부족 문제 해결을 위한 주택 공 급 확대, 주민들의 삶의 질 향상을 위한 핵심 서비스 제공 등을 주요 목표로 삼 고 있다고 설명했다. 또한 앵커리지를 안전하면서도 주민과 방문객 모두에게 환영받는 도시로 만들겠다는 비전을 공 유했다.

이날 시장이 강조한 핵심 주제 중 하나 는 알래스카의 물류 중심지인 ‘돈 영 항 만(Don Young Port of Alaska)’에 관한 것 이었다. 주 인구의 약 90%가 이 항만을 통해 들어오는 생필품과 식료품에 의존 하고 있는 만큼, 항만 현대화 사업(Port of Alaska Modernization Program)은 알 래스카의 미래를 위한 중요한 기반 사업 임을 강조했다.

시장 발표는 보건, 교통, 인프라 분야로 이어졌으며, 특히 ‘네이버후드 그린웨이 (Neighborhood Greenways)’ 프로그램을 소개했다. 이 프로그램은 주택가의 교통 량을 줄이고 보행자 및 자전거 이용자 등 비자동차 교통수단의 안전한 이동을 촉진하기 위해 설계되었다.

이어지는 발표에서는 노숙자 문제와 공 공안전에 대해서도 상세히 다뤘다. 라 프랑스 시장은 현재 공원과 산책로 정 화 활동을 확대하고 있으며, 규제 집행 과 캠프 철거를 통해 노숙자들을 보호소 로 이주시킬 수 있도록 노력하고 있다 고 밝혔다. 지금까지 60만 파운드가 넘 는 쓰레기를 공공 부지에서 수거했다고 도 전했다.

마지막으로, 시장은 주민 참여의 중요성 과 모든 시민이 시정에 목소리를 낼 수 있도록 보장하는 ‘형평성과 포용 사무국 (Office of Equity and Inclusion)’의 역할을 강조하며 발표를 마무리했다.

이날 행사는 참석자들과의 질의응답 시 간으로 마무리되었으며, 한 주민은 최근 자신이 거주하는 지역에서 발생한 반복 적인 차량 침입 사례를 언급하며 공공안 전에 대한 우려를 전달했다.

이번 시장의 방문은 AAPI 유산의 달을 맞아 앵커리지 시정부와 한인사회 간의 관계를 더욱 굳건히 다지는 의미 있는 시간이었다.

On Wednesday, May 14th, Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and her staff visited the Korean American Community Center of Anchorage as part of her outreach efforts during Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. The visit was a chance to share her administration’s vision for the city and engage directly with members of the Korean community to hear their concerns.

The meeting began with a warm welcome from Andy Kwon, President of the Korean American Community of Anchorage. Kwon shared a brief history of the Korean presence in Alaska, noting that over 8,000 Koreans currently live in the state. He also highlighted the more than 350 Korean-owned businesses and 25+ churches that help form a vibrant and active community. Kwon mentioned that many Korean organizations work together, such as the Korean Language School, the Korean Senior Citizen Academy, the Korean Cultural Center of Alaska, and the Consular Office of the Republic of Korea.

Mayor LaFrance then shared key focus areas of her administration, including making Anchorage’s streets, trails, and parks safer; addressing the housing shortage by building more units; and delivering essential services to improve the lives of all residents. She emphasized her vision of making Anchorage not only a safe city but also a welcoming place for both residents and visitors.

A major topic of her update was the Port of Alaska—specifically the Don Young Port—which is critical for the entire state, as nearly 90% of Alaskans rely on the goods and food delivered through this hub. She discussed the Port of Alaska Modernization Program, which aims to secure and improve this lifeline for generations to come.

The Mayor also outlined initiatives related to public health, transportation, and infrastructure. She introduced the Neighborhood Greenways program, which is designed to reduce traffic in residential areas and encourage alternative forms of travel such as walking and biking.

Homelessness and public safety were also addressed in detail. Mayor LaFrance reported that her team has removed more than 600,000 pounds of trash from public lands as part of a comprehensive effort to clean up parks and trails. The city is also increasing enforcement and outreach to transition unhoused individuals into shelters. She concluded her remarks by underscoring the importance of public participation and the role of the Office of Equity and Inclusion in ensuring that all community members have a voice in local government.

The evening ended with a Q&A session where attendees had the chance to ask questions and share concerns. One pressing issue raised was public safety, with a resident voicing frustration over repeated car break-ins in their neighborhood.

The Mayor’s visit marks a meaningful step toward strengthening connections between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Korean American community during AAPI Heritage Month.
