2022년, 알래스카 주 하원의 제런 타 (Rep. Geran Tarr) 의원은 백인숙 씨의 이름을 딴 다리 명명 법안(House Bill 359)을 발의했다. 이 다리는 브래가우 (Bragaw) 스트리트를 글렌 하이웨이 (Glenn Highway) 위로 연결하며, 보행자 용 계단과 터널, 자전거 도로도 함께 포 함된 설계다.

이 법안은 같은 해 8월 상원 법안

203(Senate Bill 203)에 통합되어 통과되 었고, 시에서는 표지판 설치와 명명식을 위해 약 7,000달러를 배정했다.

처음에는 백 씨가 이 제안을 사양했지 만, 아들의권유로“이것이 한국인의 위 상을 높이는 일”이라는 설득에 마음을 돌렸다. 이 다리는 미국에서 최초로 한 국인의 이름이 붙은 다리라는 점에서 역 사적인 의미를 지닌다.

Anchorage, Alaska — October 2025 — For decades, Insook Baik has been a cornerstone of Anchorage’s Korean American community, building her reputation not only as a successful business owner but also as a generous community supporter.

A Pioneer in the Service Industry

Baik operates a Shell gas station in Anchorage, earning respect for her strong work ethic and dedication to customer service. She has operated the Shell gas station for 43 years. She became one of the most recognizable Korean entrepreneurs in Alaska, representing both the immigrant spirit of perseverance and the ability to thrive in competitive industries.

Giving Back to the Community

Beyond her business achievements, Baek is best known for her generosity. Each year on Thanksgiving, she has opened her doors to provide free meals for hundreds of Alaskans, regardless of background. This tradition made her a beloved figure not only within the Korean community but across Anchorage.

Community members recall her as someone who “treats everyone like family” and who has consistently used her success to uplift those around her. Her efforts have built bridges between Anchorage’s Korean American residents and the broader Alaskan community.

Honored with a Bridge in Her Name. In 2022, Alaska House of Representatives member Geran Tarr introduced House Bill 359 to name a bridge after Baek. The bridge would allow Bragaw Street to cross over the Glenn Highway while also providing steps and a tunnel for pedestrians, along with bike lanes. The measure passed as part of Senate Bill 203 in August 2022, and the city allocated $7,000 to erect a sign and hold a naming ceremony.

Initially, Baik resisted the honor, but she consented after her son persuaded her that it would be an honor to all Korean Americans. The bridge is historically significant as the first bridge in the United States named after a Korean American.

A Respected Community Figure

Today, Insook Baik continues to play an active role in Anchorage civic life. She is often cited as an example of how Korean immigrants have enriched Alaska through entrepreneurship, cultural contributions, and philanthropy. Insook Baik is also a woman of faith. A humble Christian who has served on many missionary trips and credits a lot of her work to sharing Christ’s love.

Her story remains a testament to the lasting impact of immigrants who combine business success with community service — ensuring that their legacy extends far beyond commerce and into the lives of neighbors and families across Alaska.
