2025년 5월 6일(화), 정기 회의를 개최 한 앵커리지 시의회는 만장일치로 결의 안을 채택하고 2025년 5월을 ‘아시안 아메리칸 및 태평양 아일랜더(AAPI) 유 산의 달’로 공식 지정했다. 이 결의안 은 아시아 및 태평양 섬 지역에 뿌리를 둔 앵커리지 내 47,000여 명의 주민들 의 문화, 역사, 그리고 지역사회에 대한 기여를 기념하기 위한 것이다.

결의안은 AAPI 커뮤니티가 알래스카에 가져다주는 언어, 전통, 신앙의 다양성을 강조하며, 가족 사랑, 근면함, 그리고 시 민 참여에 대한 그들의 가치는 알래스카 주와 미국의 창립 이념을 반영한다고 밝 혔다. AAPI 알래스칸들은 기업 활동부터 공공 봉사에 이르기까지 앵커리지의 경 제를 강화하고 문화적 풍요로움을 더하 는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다.

또한, 이번 결의안은 앵커리지 출신 필 리핀계 진지비브 미나(Genevieve Mina) 주 하원의원의 선출, 페어뱅크스 출신 스콧 가와사키(Scott Kawasaki) 주 상 원의원의 재선, 그리고 추수감사절 무 료 식사 나눔 활동으로 미국 내 최초 로 한인 이름이 붙은 다리가 된 인숙 백 (Insook Baik) 씨의 업적 등을 주요 이정 표로 언급했다.

5월 한 달 동안 AAPI 유산의 달을 기념 하기 위해 다양한 커뮤니티 단체들이 여러 행사를 주최할 예정이다. 그 중심 행사로는 오는 5월 31일(토) 델라니 파 크 스트립(Delaney Park Strip)에서 열릴 ‘AAPI 문화 국기 기념의 날’이 있다.

이 행사는 미국령 사모아 투툴라 섬에 서의 성조기 게양(1900년 4월 17일), 첫 일본 이민자들의 도착(1843년 5월 7일), 그리고 미국 대륙 횡단 철도를 건설한 중국 노동자들의 기여(1869년 5월 10 일) 등 아시아계 미국인 역사 속 주요 사 건들을 기리는 행사다.

시의회는 마지막으로 앵커리지 시민 모 두가 AAPI 커뮤니티의 지속적인 유산과 밝은 미래를 인식하고 함께 축하해줄 것 을 독려하며, 2025년 5월을 공식적으로 ‘아시안 아메리칸 및 태평양 아일랜더 유산의 달’로 선포했다.

During its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 6, the Anchorage Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing May 2025 as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, celebrating the culture, history, and contributions of more than 47,000 residents in Anchorage who trace their roots to Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The resolution highlights the rich languages, traditions, and beliefs that AAPI communities bring to Alaska, noting that their love of family, hard work, and civic engagement reflects the founding principles of the state and nation. From entrepreneurship to public service, AAPI Alaskans play a vital role in strengthening Anchorage’s economy and enriching its cultural landscape.

The resolution also acknowledged historic milestones and achievements, including the election of Filipino American Representative Genevieve Mina from Anchorage, the re-election of Senator Scott Kawasaki from Fairbanks, and the naming of the first U.S. bridge after a Korean American—Anchorage’s own Insook Baik—for her annual Thanksgiving meal drive.

This month, several AAPI organizations will host events to commemorate AAPI Heritage Month. A flagship event—the AAPI Cultural Flag Day—will take place on Saturday, May 31, at Delaney Park Strip. The celebration honors key dates in Asian Pacific American history, such as the first raising of the U.S. flag in American Samoa, the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants, and the contribution of Chinese railroad workers.

In closing, the Assembly proclaimed May 2025 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Anchorage, encouraging all residents to recognize and celebrate the enduring legacy and vibrant future of AAPI communities across Alaska.
