2025년 5월 3일, 챔프 태권도(Champ Taekwondo)가 주최한 제11회 그레이 트 알래스카 무술 페스티벌 및 토너먼 트가 UAA 에이비스 스포츠 콤플렉스 (UAA Avis Sports Complex)에서 성대하 게 열렸다. 이번 대회는 알래스카 전역 은 물론 미국 본토 하단 지역(Lower 48) 에서도 무술인들이 대거 참가하여 실력 과 절제, 문화적 자긍심을 선보이는 장 이 되었다.

이번 대회는 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 유 대회장(Master Yu)이 처음으로 주관한 무술 대회라는 점에서 더욱 의미 있는 행사였다. 품새, 격파, 겨루기, 무기 종목 등 다양한 부문에서 참가자들의 끈기와 열정이 빛난 자리였다.

대회는 미국과 한국 양국의 국가가 연주 되는 개회식으로 시작되었으며, 알래스 카 청소년 군사 아카데미(Alaska Military Youth Academy)의 국기 입장식이 이어 졌다. 또한 윤사라(Sara Yoon) 씨의 전통 한국 사물놀이 공연이 이어져 행사에 문 화적인 깊이를 더했다.

참가자들은 켄터키, 웨스트버지니아, 그 리고 팔머(Palmer), 와실라(Wasilla), 이글 리버(Eagle River), 니키스키(Nikiski), 솔도 트나(Soldotna), 앵커리지(Anchorage) 등 알래스카 각 지역에서 모여 연령을 불 문하고 오랜 준비의 결실을 무대 위에서 펼쳤다. 가족과 지도자, 응원객들이 함 께하며 큰 응원을 보냈다.

대회에는 VIP 인사들의 축사와 축전도 도착했다. 마이크 던리비(Mike Dunleavy) 알래스카 주지사와 닉 베기치 (Nick Begich) 연방 하원의원의 축하 메 시지가 소개되어, 본 대회의 청소년 성 장, 문화 교류, 그리고 지역 공동체 단합 의 중요성을 재조명했다.

이번 대회를 통해 태권도는 단순한 무술 을 넘어 자기 계발의 훌륭한 수단이자 한국 문화를 깊이 있게 경험할 수 있는 기회임을 다시 한 번 확인할 수 있었다. 태권도를 통해 참가자들은 신체적 수련 뿐 아니라 예의, 인내, 존중과 같은 정신 적 가치를 배우며, 한국의 전통과 문화 를 자연스럽게 익히고 있다.

챔프 무술 아카데미는 이러한 경험을 더 욱 확장하기 위해 2026년 3월, 한국 방 문을 계획하고 있으며, 같은 해 10월에 는 켄터키 루이스빌(Louisville)에서 열릴 예정인 전국 태권도 대회에 참가할 가 능성도 논의되고 있다. 국제적인 경험과 교류를 통해 학생들이 한층 더 성장할 수 있는 기회를 마련하고자 한다.

무술인들의 뜨거운 열기와 함께한 이번 제11회 대회는 무술이 지닌 힘, 존중, 인 내의 가치를 다시 한번 일깨우는 계기가 되었다. 하루 종일 각 종목의 수상자가 발표되며, 참가자들의 노력과 재능을 격 려하는 시간이 이어졌다.

유 대회장은 “알래스카는 물론 전국의 무술인들이 함께한 오늘의 대회는 새로 운 도약과 연결의 시작”이라며 참가자와 자원봉사자, 관중들에게 깊은 감사의 뜻 을 전했다.

On May 3, 2025, the 11th Annual Great Alaska Martial Arts Festival and Tournament, hosted by Champ Taekwondo, was held at the UAA Avis Sports Complex. The event brought together martial artists not only from across Alaska but also from the Lower 48, showcasing their skills, discipline, and cultural pride.

This year’s tournament held special significance as it was the first competition organized by Tournament Director Master Yu since the COVID-19 pandemic. The event featured powerful performances in forms, board breaking, sparring, and weapons, all highlighting the perseverance and passion of the martial arts community.

The tournament kicked off with a moving opening ceremony, featuring the national anthems of both the United States and South Korea, followed by a flag presentation by the Alaska Military Youth Academy. A traditional Korean drum performance by Sara Yoon added a meaningful cultural element to the event.

Participants of all ages gathered from across the country, including Kentucky, West Virginia, and Alaskan cities such as Palmer, Wasilla, Eagle River, Nikiski, Soldotna, and Anchorage. Competitors demonstrated the results of their hard work and training in front of a lively crowd of families, coaches, and supporters.

The event was also honored with congratulatory letters and remarks from VIPs, including Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and U.S. Congressman Nick Begich. Both praised the tournament’s role in fostering youth development, cultural exchange, and community unity.

The tournament served as a reminder that Taekwondo is not just a martial art, but also a powerful tool for self-development and a meaningful way to connect with Korean culture. Through Taekwondo, participants learn not only physical discipline but also values such as respect, patience, and humility while naturally engaging with Korean traditions.

To expand these experiences, Champ Martial Arts is planning a trip to Korea in March 2026, offering students the chance to further immerse themselves in the birthplace of Taekwondo. The team is also discussing potential participation in a national Taekwondo tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, scheduled for October 2025—another step in providing students with global exposure and growth opportunities.

With the strong energy and unity displayed at this year’s festival, the 11th Annual Great Alaska Martial Arts Festival served as an inspiring showcase of strength, honor, and resilience. Awards were presented throughout the day, recognizing the talents and efforts of competitors from all regions.

Master Yu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and spectators, saying, “Today’s tournament is not just an event, but the beginning of a new chapter of connection and progress for martial artists in Alaska and beyond.”
