앵커리지, 알래스카 – 댄 설리반( Dan Sullivan) 연방 상원의원이 11월 21일(금) 앵커리지 한인회관을 방문해, 올해 마 지막으로 열린 앵커리지 한인 시니어회 모임에 참석했다. 이번 모임은 지역 원 로와 지도자들이 함께 한 따뜻한 분위 기 속에서 진행되었으며, 설리반 의원은 한·미 동맹, 역사적인 무역 협정, 그리 고 알래스카의 미래 기회에 대한 견해를 나누는 시간을 가졌다.

설리반 의원은 먼저 한인 커뮤니티가 오 랜 세월 알래스카 발전에 기여해 온 점 을 높이 평가하며 감사의 뜻을 전했다.

그는 한인 사회를 세우고 지켜온 원로들 의 노고를 언급하며, “여러분의 인내와 헌신이 오늘의 커뮤니티를 만들었고, 그 위에서 다음 세대가 성장하고 있다”고 말했다. 해병대 복무, 국무부 차관보, 알 래스카 천연자원국(DNR) 커미셔너, 그 리고 현재 연방 상원의원으로 활동하며 한국을 여러 차례 방문한 그는, 개인적 으로도 한미 관계 강화에 깊은 사명감을 느끼고 있다고 강조했다.

설리반 의원은 2023년 미국 역사상 최초로 ‘상원 코리아 코커스(Senate Korea Caucus)’를 창설하며 양국 간 경제·외교·안보 협력을 더욱 심화하 는 기반을 마련했다.

한-미 동맹 강화

설리반 의원은 현재의 한·미 동맹을 두고 “역사상 그 어느 때보다 강력하 다”고 평가하며, 최근 트럼프 대통령의 국빈 방미와 방위·경제·에너지 전반 에 걸친 새로운 무역 협정 체결을 중요 한 전환점으로 언급했다.

그는 지난주 조현동 주미대사(강 대사) 와의 면담 내용을 공유하며 한국의 대 규모 미국 투자 계획을 설명했다. 여기 에는 다음과 같은 주요 투자 내용이 포 함된다.

미국 조선업, 인력 개발, 조선소 현대화 등에 1,500억 달러 규모 투자

에너지, 반도체, 핵심 광물, AI·양자기 술, 제약 등 전략 산업에 2,000억 달러 추가 투자 이에 대한 상응 조치로 미국은 자동차 및 자동차 부품 등 일부 한국산 제품의

관세를 인하

설리반 의원은 한국의 이러한 투자 논의 가 10년 넘게 추진해 온 알래스카 LNG 프로젝트에도 큰 기회가 될 수 있다고 강조했다.

6·25 참전용사에 대한 감사

한국전쟁 역사에 깊은 관심을 가져온 설 리반 의원은 양국이 70여 년 전 함께 치 러낸 희생을 다시 한 번 되새겼다.

그는 밤하늘에서 촬영된 한반도 위성 사 진-칠흑같이 어두운 북한과 밝게 빛나 는 대한민국-이 참전용사들의 희생으로 이루어진 자유의 상징이라고 설명했다.

또한 2023년 워싱턴 D.C.에서 윤석열 대통령이 생존한 미국·한국전 참전용 사들을 직접 만나 감사 인사를 전했던 감동적인 순간을 언급하며, “그분들의 헌신이 오늘의 대한민국을 만들었다” 고 말했다.

알래스카 한인사회에 대한 지속적 관심

설리반 의원은 2022년 서울에서 한국 전 영웅 백선엽 장군의 이름을 딴 ‘백 선엽 한미동맹상’을 수상한 사실을 언 급하며, 한미 동맹을 더욱 강화하겠다는 의지를 재확인했다.

그는 “알래스카에 계신 한인 여러분의 목소리에도 항상 귀를 기울이겠다”며 이민, 사회보장, 재향군인회(VA) 등 도움 이 필요한 분야가 있으면 언제든 연락해 달라고 요청했다.

설리반 의원은 마지막으로 앵커리지 한 인 시니어회와 앵커리지 한인회에 감사 를 전하며, 조만간 다시 방문해 ‘알래스 카 오퍼튜니티 법안(Alaska Opportunity Act)’과 이 법이 한인 사회를 비롯해 모든 알래스칸에게 제공할 기회에 대해 더 자세히 설명하겠다고 밝혔다.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan visited the Korean American Community Center in Anchorage on Friday, November 21st, joining local elders, leaders, and members of the Anchorage Korean Senior Association for their final meeting of the year. The gathering, filled with warmth and appreciation for the community’s seniors, also served as an opportunity for the senator to share reflections on the U.S.–Korea alliance, historic trade developments, and opportunities for Alaska.

Senator Sullivan opened his remarks by honoring the Korean American community’s longstanding contributions to the state. He thanked the elders who helped establish and sustain the community, noting that their perseverance built the foundation the next generation now stands on. Sullivan, who has spent significant time in South Korea throughout his career—as a Marine, Assistant Secretary of State, Alaska’s DNR Commissioner, and now a U.S. Senator—emphasized his personal commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations.

In 2023, Sullivan launched the first-ever Senate Korea Caucus, an initiative dedicated to deepening economic, diplomatic, and security cooperation between the United States and South Korea.

Strengthening the U.S.–ROK Alliance

Sullivan described today’s U.S.–South Korea alliance as “stronger than it has ever been,” citing President Trump’s recent state visit and the signing of a historic trade agreement that expands cooperation across defense, economic, and energy sectors.

Sullivan shared details from his meeting last week with Korean Ambassador to the United States Cho Hyundong (Ambassador Kang), where they discussed major new Korean investments in the United States, including:

$150 billion in shipbuilding-related investments for U.S. shipyards, workforce development, and modernization $200 billion in additional Korean investment in strategic U.S. industries such as energy, semiconductors, critical minerals, AI/quantum technologies, and pharmaceuticals

In return, the U.S. will reduce tariffs on specific South Korean exports, including automobiles and auto parts.

Energy development was a major part of the conversation, Sullivan said, noting that Korean investment could support progress on the long-discussed Alaska LNG project—a project he has championed for more than a decade.

Honoring Korean War Veterans

Senator Sullivan, known for his deep engagement with Korean War history, took a moment to reflect on the sacrifices shared by both nations more than 70 years ago. He spoke about the emotional impact of satellite images showing a dark, isolated North Korea contrasted with the bright, thriving democracy of South Korea—an illustration of what was gained through the service and sacrifice of Korean War veterans.

Sullivan recalled a moving 2023 event in Washington, D.C., where President Yoon Suk Yeol honored dozens of surviving Korean War veterans, personally thanking them for protecting a country and a people they had never met.

A Continued Commitment to Alaska’s Korean Community

In closing, Sullivan noted that in 2022, he received the Paik Sun-Yup ROK–U.S. Alliance Award in Seoul, an honor named after one of the Korean War’s most celebrated military leaders.

He pledged to continue strengthening the alliance and also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Korean Americans in Alaska.

Sullivan thanked the Anchorage Korean Senior Association and the Korean American Community of Anchorage for hosting him and said he looks forward to returning soon to share updates on major initiatives, including the Alaska Opportunity Act and the benefits it could bring to Korean Alaskans and the wider community.
