2025년 6월 18일(수), 수잔 라프란스 앵커리지 시장은 시청에서 “시장과의 만남 (Visit with the Mayor)”이라는 제목으로 초청된 지역 사회 단체 대표들과 함께 비공개 간담회를 개최했다. 이번 간담회에는 앵커리지 한인 커뮤니티 청년 단체인 NEXGEN과 앵커리지 한인 뉴스도 참석해 시장의 시정 우선 과제에 대한 대화를 나눴다.

간담회에서는 현재 앵커리지가 직면한 며, 특히 노숙자 문제와 주택 부족 문제가 최우선 안건으로 다뤄졌다. 라프란스
시장은 노숙인 캠프 문제에 대해 단순 철거를 넘어 회복 프로그램 제공을 중심으로 한 대응 방안을 강조하며, 시 정부의 지속적인 대응 의지를 밝혔다.

전국적인 주택 부족 사태에 대응하기 위한 주택 건설 계획도 소개됐다. 시장은 향후 10년 동안 1만 채의 신규 주택을
건설하겠다는 야심찬 목표를 세웠으며, 특히 다세대 주택 건설에 중점을 둘 계획이다. 이를 뒷받침하기 위한 세금 감
면 인센티브 제도도 최근 통과되었다고전했다.

기본 공공서비스의 안정성도 중요한 의제로 다뤄졌다. 라프란스 시장은 제설 작업의 효율성과 911 응급전화 대응 속도 개선을 포함한 기초 행정서비스의 중요성을 강조하며, 시민들이 제때 필요한 서비스를 받을 수 있도록 하겠다고 밝혔다.

경제 발전과 일자리 창출에 대한 논의도 이어졌다. 시장은 테드 스티븐스 앵커리지 국제공항 내에서 빠르게 성장 중인 NorthLink Aviation의 성과를 언급하며, 해당 기업이 인프라 확장뿐만 아니라 제빙 화학물질 수거 프로그램 도입, 직원 들을 위한 현장 내 보육 시설 제공 등일과 가정의 양립을 돕기 위한 선진적인 정책을 시행할 계획이라고 소개했다.

보육비 상승 문제 역시 간담회에서 중요한 주제로 다뤄졌다. 라프란스 시장은 많은 가정이 겪고 있는 경제적 부담을 인식하고 있으며, 시 정부가 보육 종 사자와 관련 사업체를 위한 보조금을 지원하고 있다고 전했다. 또한, 보육의 경 제적 접근성을 높이기 위한 새로운 보험 모델도 검토 중이라고 밝혔다.

이와 함께, 앵커리지 다운타운 재개발도 주요 논의 주제 중 하나였다. 시장은 오래된 노드스트롬 건물과 4번가 극장 부
지 등 핵심 지역 개발의 필요성을 강조 하며, 구 시청 건물 부지에는 새로운 도서관 건립 계획이 추진 중임을 밝혔다.

이는 다운타운 활성화를 위한 시 정부의 의지를 보여주는 상징적인 조치다.

이번 간담회를 통해 한인을 포함한 지역 사회 구성원들은 시장의 행정 방향에 대해 더 깊이 이해하고 직접 소통하는 기
회를 가졌으며, 보다 포용적이고 민첩하며 미래 지향적인 앵커리지를 위한 비전에 공감하는 자리가 되었다.

Mayor Suzanne LaFrance hosted a “Visit with the Mayor” community conversation at City Hall on Wednesday, June 18th, bringing together invited leaders from various community organizations to discuss key issues and the administration’s current priorities. Among the participants were representatives from NEXGEN, a young adult group within the Korean American
Community of Anchorage, and Anchorage Korean News.

The meeting focused on several pressing concerns facing the city, with homelessness and housing topping the agenda. Mayor LaFrance emphasized her administration’s commitment to addressing homeless encampments, with an approach centered on not just abatement but also offering recovery programs for those experiencing homelessness.

The Mayor also outlined a bold housing initiative to combat the ongoing nationwide housing shortage. Her administration has set an ambitious goal to build 10,000 new homes over the next decade, with a particular focus on multi-family housing. A new tax incentive program was recently passed to encourage development in this area.

Ensuring reliable basic services, including efficient snow plowing and rapid 911 response times, remains a high priority, Mayor LaFrance shared. She noted the city’s focus on delivering essential public services in a timely and effective manner to all residents.

Economic development and job creation were also discussed. The Mayor highlighted the rapid growth of
NorthLink Aviation at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The company is not only expanding infrastructure but also introducing a de-icing chemical recovery program. It plans to offer on-site childcare for employees—a forward-thinking move to support working parents.

The high cost of childcare was another major topic. Mayor LaFrance acknowledged the burden on families and noted that the city has issued grants to support childcare workers and businesses. Additionally, she mentioned that the administration is exploring new insurance models that could help make childcare more affordable and accessible.

Revitalizing Downtown Anchorage was another focal point of the discussion.
The Mayor emphasized the importance of developing key landmarks, such as the former Nordstrom building and the site of the old 4th Avenue Theatre. Plans are also underway to build a new library at the old City Hall location, further signaling the city’s commitment to reinvigorating the downtown core.

The conversation enabled community members, including those from the Korean American community, to gain a deeper understanding and become more engaged with the Mayor’s vision for a more inclusive, responsive, and forward-looking Anchorage.
