존경하는 700만 재외동포 여러분, 뜻깊은 80주년 광복절을 여러분과 함께 진심으로 축하하고 기뻐합니다. 80년 전, 우리는 빼앗겼던 빛을 되찾았 습니다. 스스로 우리의 미래를 정하고, 자신의 삶을 선택할 수 있는 자유와 권 리를 되찾은 것입니다.

자주국가, 주권회복을 향한 불굴의 의지 로 스스로를 불사른 수많은 독립운동가 들과 우리 국민의 헌신과 희생이 없었다 면 불가능했을 일입니다.

특히 조국의 독립이라는 숭고한 목표를 위해 머나먼 타국에서도 뜨겁게 헌신하 신 무수한 재외동포들이 계셨다는 사실 을 또렷이 기억합니다. 독립운동의 불씨 를 지켜내고 임시정부를 지원해주신 여 러분의 열정과 헌신이 계셨기에 우리는 빛을 되찾을 수 있었습니다.

재외동포 여러분께서는 광복 이후에도 조국이 위기에 처할 때마다 조국을 지켜 주셨습니다. 독재의 억압에 맞서 조국의 민주화를 위해 함께 노력해 주셨고, 12.3 내란 극복과정에서도 아낌없는 연 대로 힘을 모아주셨습니다. 진심으로 감 사드립니다. 언제 어디서나 빛나는 애국 심을 발휘해주신 재외동포들의 불굴의 역사를 대한민국은 영원히 잊지 않을 것 입니다.

지난 80년 동안 재외동포 여러분의 희 생과 헌신에 힘입어 대한민국은 눈부신 성취를 이뤘습니다. 식민지에서 해방된 나라 가운데 유일하게 산업화와 민주화 를 동시에 이뤄냈고, 세계인이 부러워하 는 문화강국으로 우뚝 섰습니다.

오늘날 재외동포 사회도 비약적인 발전 을 이뤄냈습니다. 동포 여러분께서는 경제, 사회, 예술 등 다양한 분야에서 두 각을 나타내며 세계 각지에서 우리 민족 의 저력을 보여주고 계십니다. 낯선 환 경 속에서도 굴하지 않고 동포 커뮤니티 를 지켜내며 빛나는 성취를 이뤄내신 여 러분이 정말 자랑스럽습니다.

이러한 빛나는 활약이 다음 세대에도 계 속 이어질 수 있도록 더 꼼꼼히 챙겨나 가겠습니다. 차세대 동포들이 한국인이 라는 자긍심과 정체성을 지켜가며 인재 로 성장할 수 있도록 교육과 문화, 네트 워크 형성을 포함한 실질적인 지원을 더 욱 확대해 나가겠습니다. 동포사회의 밝 은 미래를 위해 정부가 든든히 뒷받침하 겠습니다.

존경하는 재외동포 여러분, 대한민국의 국력을 키우고 국격을 높이는 것이 여 러분의 한결같은 성원에 보답하는 길이 라고 믿습니다. 80년 전 자주국가의 빛 을 되찾은 것처럼, 전 세계 재외동포 여 러분과 우리 국민의 위대한 역량을 한 데 모은다면, 다시 힘차게 성장 발전하 는 나라, 모두 함께 잘 사는 나라, 국민 이 행복한 나라를 만들 수 있으리라고 믿습니다.

계신 곳이 어디든, 조국 대한민국에 대 한 자부심을 품고 대한민국을 대표한다 는 마음가짐으로 살아가시는 동포 여러 분께 늘 감사드립니다. 언제나 자랑스러 운 조국, 믿고 기댈 수 있는 대한민국을 만들기 위해 최선을 다하겠습니다.

It is with heartfelt joy that I celebrate this meaningful 80th anniversary of Liberation Day together with you.

Eighty years ago, we reclaimed the light that had been taken from us. We regained the freedom and rights to determine our own future and to choose the course of our own lives. This would not have been possible without the indomitable will of countless independence fighters and the dedication and sacrifice of our people, who gave everything for the cause of a sovereign nation and the restoration of our independence.

We especially remember with clarity the countless overseas compatriots who, even in distant foreign lands, devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the noble goal of Korea’s independence. Because of your passion and sacrifice in preserving the spark of the independence movement and supporting the Provisional Government, we were able to regain our light.

Even after Liberation, overseas Koreans stood by their homeland whenever it faced a crisis. You joined the struggle against dictatorship for Korea’s democratization, and during the process of overcoming the December 3rd uprising, you gathered strength through unwavering solidarity. For this, I express my deepest gratitude.

The Republic of Korea will never forget the indomitable history of patriotism that overseas Koreans have shown, shining wherever you have lived. Over the past 80 years, thanks to your sacrifice and devotion, Korea has achieved remarkable progress. Among nations that were liberated from colonial rule, we stand as the only one to have achieved both industrialization and democratization, and today, we are recognized worldwide as a cultural powerhouse admired by the world.

The overseas Korean community itself has also achieved great strides. Across the globe, you are demonstrating the strength of our people by excelling in diverse fields such as the economy, society, and the arts. I am truly proud of you for achieving such shining accomplishments while preserving your communities and overcoming hardships in unfamiliar environments.

We will ensure that your brilliant endeavors continue into the next generation. To help younger generations of overseas Koreans grow as talented individuals with pride and identity as Koreans, we will expand practical support—including education, culture, and network-building. The government will stand firmly behind you for a brighter future for the overseas Korean community.

Dear compatriots, I believe that strengthening Korea’s national power and raising our global standing is the best way to repay your unwavering support. Just as we regained the light of independence 80 years ago, if we unite the great capabilities of our people at home and abroad, I am confident we can once again build a nation that grows and prospers vigorously, a nation where everyone prospers together, and a nation where all citizens are happy.

Wherever you may be, I am always grateful to you for living with pride in Korea and with the mindset of representing the Republic of Korea. I will do my utmost to build a proud homeland, a Korea that you can always trust and rely upon.
