앵커리지, 알래스카 – 2025년 11월 8일 주앵커리지 대한민국 총영사관은 11월 8일(목) 앵커리지 한인회관에서 특별한 넥스트 제너레이션(Next Generation) 행 사를 개최했다. 이번 행사는 앵커리지 지역의 젊은 한인 차세대들이 한자리에 모여 영감과 교류, 그리고 도전 의식을 나누는 뜻깊은 자리가 되었다.

이번 행사의 목적은 알래스카 한인 차 세대들에게 서로 네트워크를 형성하고 관계를 구축하며, 미국 사회에서 두각 을 나타내고 있는 한인 리더의 경험을 통해 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것 이었다.

특별 연사: 시애틀항만위원회 샘 조

(Sam Cho) 위원

이날 행사의 하이라이트는 시애틀항 만위원회(Port of Seattle) 위원 샘 조(Sam Cho)의 강연이었다. 조 위원은 시애틀 에서 직접 날아와 자신의 놀라운 커리어 여정을 소개하고, 앵커리지 지역의 젊은 세대들에게 조언과 영감을 전했다.

샘 조 위원은 아메리칸 대학교(American University)에서 학사 학위를, 런던정 경대학(London School of Economics)에 서 석사 학위를 취득했다. 그는 초기에 아미 베라(Ami Bera) 연방 하원의원의 입법 보좌관으로 근무했으며, 이후 오바 마 행정부 특별보좌관(Political Appointee Special Assistant)으로 재직한 경력을 가 지고 있다.

이후 그는 세븐 시즈 익스포트(Seven Seas Export)의 창립자이자 CEO로서, 2010년대 후반 아시아 지역의 심각한 달걀 공급 부족 사태 당시 미국산 달걀 수출을 성공적으로 주도했다. 현재는 미 국 내에서 가장 영향력 있는 항만 및 항 공 허브 중 하나인 시애틀항만위원회 위 원으로 활동하고 있다.

리더십과 업적

조 위원은 시애틀항만위원회에서 정책 수립, 예산 및 채권 관리, 국제·국내 비 즈니스 개발, 주요 프로젝트 감독 등 다 양한 업무를 담당하고 있다. 또한 노스 웨스트 항만연합(Northwest Seaport Alliance) 활동에도 적극 참여하며, 최근에 는 현대자동차의 차량을 시애틀항으로 수입하는 협약을 성사시키는 등 큰 성과 를 거두었다. 그는 이 성과를 “가장 자 랑스러운 업적 중 하나”라고 말했다.

뿐만 아니라, 그는 그레이터 시애틀 수 출 엑셀러레이터(Greater Seattle Export Accelerator) 프로그램에서도 활동하며, 30개 이상의 스타트업이 4억5천만 달러 이상의 투자금을 유치하고 500개 이상 의 일자리를 창출하도록 돕고 있다. 이 프로그램을 통해 많은 예비 창업자들이 수출입 및 글로벌 비즈니스의 기본 원리 를 배우며 성장하고 있다.

한인 사회를 위한 헌신

전문적인 성공 외에도 조 위원은 지역 사회에 꾸준히 공헌하고 있다. 그는 여 러 비영리 단체와 위원회에서 활동하며 한인 커뮤니티의 시민 참여를 촉진하고 있다. 특히 유권자 등록 캠페인을 지원 하고, 한국어 번역 투표용지가 한인 유 권자들에게 제공되도록 노력하고 있다.

차세대를 위한 영감의 시간

행사는 질의응답과 네트워킹 세션으로 마무리되었다. 참석자들은 조 위원에게 직접 질문하며 자신의 꿈과 목표를 나누 는 시간을 가졌다.

참석한 많은 이들은 한인으로서의 정체 성을 지키며 공공 서비스와 비즈니스 분 야에서 큰 성취를 이룬 인물의 이야기에 깊은 감명을 받았다고 전했다.

이번 행사는 주앵커리지 대한민국 총영 사관의 주최로 진행되었으며, 공동체와 멘토십의 중요성을 되새기게 하는 의미 있는 자리가 되었다.

The Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Anchorage hosted a special Next Generation event on Thursday, November 8th, at the Korean American Community Center of Anchorage, bringing together young Korean Americans for an evening of inspiration, connection, and empowerment.

The event’s purpose was to provide an opportunity for the next generation of Korean Americans in Alaska to network, build relationships, and learn from a successful Korean American leader making an impact on the national stage.

Guest Speaker: Sam Cho, Commissioner of the Port of Seattle

The highlight of the evening was an address by Sam Cho, the Commissioner of the Port of Seattle, who flew in from Seattle to share his remarkable career journey and offer advice to young adults in the Anchorage community.

Cho’s background is both impressive and inspiring. He holds a B.A. from American University and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics. His early career included serving as a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Ami Bera and later as a Political Appointee and Special Assistant under the Obama Administration.

He went on to become the Founder and CEO of Seven Seas Export, a company that played a key role in exporting eggs to Asia during a severe shortage in the late 2010s. Today, Cho serves as a Commissioner for the Port of Seattle, one of the most influential maritime and aviation hubs in the United States.

Leadership and Accomplishments

As Commissioner, Cho’s responsibilities include policy making, budget and bonding authority, business development, and overseeing international and domestic trade projects. He is also deeply involved in the Northwest Seaport Alliance, where he recently helped secure a deal with Hyundai to import vehicles into Seattle—a milestone he described as one of his proudest professional achievements.

In addition, Cho works with the Greater Seattle Export Accelerator, an initiative that has helped over 30 startups raise more than $450 million in funding and create over 500 jobs. Through this program, entrepreneurs learn the fundamentals of global trade, import, and export, empowering a new generation of business leaders.

Commitment to the Korean Community

Beyond his professional success, Sam Cho continues to give back to the community. He serves on multiple boards, including organizations that promote civic engagement within the Korean American community. His efforts include supporting voter registration drives and ensuring that translated ballots are available to Korean-speaking voters.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The evening concluded with a Q&A session and networking time, allowing attendees to engage directly with Cho and share their own aspirations. Many in attendance expressed how motivated they felt seeing someone of Korean heritage achieving such distinction in public service and business leadership.

The event, organized by the Korean Consulate of Anchorage, served as a reminder of the power of community and mentorship. Sam Cho’s story resonated deeply with the audience—showing that with perseverance, education, and civic involvement, Korean Americans in Alaska can make an impact far beyond their local community.
