ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A majo industrial incident unfolded Friday afternoon on Alaska’s North Slope as the Doyon 26 oil drilling rig—one of the largest mobile land rigs in North America—toppled over while being moved across the icy tundra, officials confirmed.

The collapse occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2026, as the rig was traveling on a seasonal ice road. Immediately following the incident, a small fire broke out but was quickly contained and controlled by emergency crews.

Personnel Safe; Minor Medical Treatment Reported

ConocoPhillips Alaska, which operates the rig on behalf of contractor Doyon Drilling Inc., said all personnel on site were accounted for and no serious injuries have been reported. By Saturday, company officials confirmed that eight people—including the two individuals on the rig at the time of the collapse and several initial responders—received medical treatment at nearby clinics but were released after evaluation.

Environmental and Infrastructure Impact
