주노, 알래스카 – 이달 초 강력한 눈사 태 위험으로 발령됐던 대피 권고가 모두 해제되면서, 주노 도심과 인근 눈사태 위험 지역에 거주하던 주민들이 다시 집 으로 돌아가고 있다.

이번 위험 상황은 연이어 몰아친 강력한 겨울 폭풍과 대기 강(atmospheric river) 의 영향으로 알래스카 남동부 지역에 기 록적인 폭설과 이후 강우가 이어지면서 시작됐다. 이로 인해 적설층의 상당 부 분이 녹아내리며 주노 일대의 눈사태 발 생 가능성이 크게 높아졌다. 당국은 주노산(Mount Juneau)과 세인 로드 (Thane Road) 인근을 포함한 주요 눈사 태 경로에서 특히 위험한 상황이 발생할 수 있다고 경고했다.

주 초에는 주노산 베렌즈(Behrends) 눈 사태 경로에서 여러 차례 소규모 눈사태 가 발생한 것으로 보고됐다. 이에 따라 시 당국은 도심과 세인 로드를 따라 위 치한 모든 알려진 눈사태 위험 지역 거 주민들에게 대피 권고를 발령했다. 일부 주민들은 센테니얼 홀(Centennial Hall) 과 같은 임시 대피소로 이동하거나, 상 황이 호전될 때까지 가족과 지인의 집에 머물렀다.

눈이 흘러내리는 장면이 영상으로 포착 되며 긴장감을 높이기도 했지만, 당국은 이번 사태로 인한 대규모 시설 피해나 인명 피해는 보고되지 않았다고 밝혔다. 주노시는 향후 대응과 감시 강화를 위해 새로운 레이더 눈사태 감지 시스템을 도 입했다. 이 시스템은 시야가 좋지 않거 나 야간에도 산비탈을 지속적으로 스캔 할 수 있어, 눈사태 조기 감지와 공공 안 전 확보에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대되 고 있다.

주 중반에 접어들며 눈사태 위험이 점 차 완화되자 대부분의 대피 권고가 해제 됐으며, 베렌즈 눈사태 경로에 대한 권 고가 마지막으로 해제되면서 임시로 거 주지를 떠났던 주민들도 모두 귀가할 수 있게 됐다.

현지 당국은 겨울철 기상 조건이 빠르 게 변할 수 있다며, 주민들에게 계속해 서 상황 변화에 주의를 기울이고 응급 관리 기관의 안내를 따를 것을 당부하 고 있다.

JUNEAU, Alaska — Residents in downtown Juneau and surrounding avalanche-prone neighborhoods are returning to their homes after the City and Borough of Juneau lifted its final evacuation advisories following a period of intense avalanche danger earlier this month.

The heightened risk began after a series of powerful winter storms and an atmospheric river brought record amounts of snow and subsequent rain to the Southeast Alaska region, melting large portions of the snowpack and increasing the likelihood of avalanches around the state capital. Officials warned of dangerous conditions along known slide paths, including those on Mount Juneau and near Thane Road.

Multiple small avalanches were reported on Mount Juneau’s Behrends slide path early in the week, prompting city officials to issue evacuation advisories for residents living in all known avalanche hazard zones downtown and along Thane Road. Some residents evacuated to emergency shelters like Centennial Hall or stayed with family and friends until conditions improved. Despite periodic releases of snow and frightening moments captured on video of slides descending near the city, authorities emphasized that no major structural damage or loss of life was reported.

To assist with monitoring and future response efforts, Juneau has deployed a new radar avalanche detection system capable of scanning slopes continuously, even in poor visibility and nighttime conditions. Officials say this system will improve early detection of avalanches and help protect public safety.

By mid-week, most evacuation advisories were rescinded as avalanche risks diminished. The Behrends slide path advisory was the last to be lifted, allowing residents who had temporarily relocated to return home.

Local officials continue to urge caution, advising residents to stay aware of changing conditions in the winter season and follow guidance from emergency management agencies.
