7월 17일 목요일, 앵커리지에 위치한 알 래스카 식물원(Alaska Botanical Garden) 은 클래식 음악, 예술가들의 손놀림, 그리고 바람에 흔들리는 나뭇잎 소리 로 가득 찼다. 이 날 열린 특별 모금 행 사 *“Flying Free: Alaska’s Artists for Alaska’s Wild Birds”*는 알래스카 야 생조류 보호를 위한 뜻깊은 자리를 마 련했다.

행사를 찾은 방문객들은 자연 속에서 예 술과 환경 보호가 어우러진 황홀한 저녁 을 경험했다. 울창한 녹음이 펼쳐진 산 책로를 따라 걷다 보면 클래식 음악이 잔잔히 들려오고, 수풀 사이사이에서 지 역 예술가들이 열정적으로 그림을 그 리는 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 정원 중심부 에 가까워지면 플루트와 클라리넷의 아 름다운 선율이 조화를 이루며 울려 퍼 졌다.

이날의 주요 연주자 중 한 명은 **텍사 스 출신의 재미교포 클라리넷 연주자 크 리스 송(Chris Song)**이었다. 현재 그는 알래스카대학교 앵커리지캠퍼스(UAA) 음악과 교수로 재직 중이며, 음악교육 프로그램을 총괄하고, UAA 윈드 앙상블 을 지휘하며, UAA 펩 밴드를 지도하고, 목관악기 실기 강의를 맡고 있다. 그의 참여는 행사에 문화적 깊이를 더해 주었 고, 많은 이들에게 감동을 안겨주었다.

On Thursday, July 17, the Alaska Botanical Garden came alive with the sound of music, the movement of artists’ hands, and the rustle of leaves as visitors gathered for Flying Free: Alaska’s Artists for Alaska’s Wild Birds—a special fundraising event supporting the protection of wild birds across the state.

Guests were treated to an enchanting evening that blended creativity and conservation. As visitors strolled through the lush, green paths of the garden, they were surrounded by the soothing sounds of classical music and the sight of local artists drawing among the vibrant foliage. Near the heart of the garden, the harmonious melodies of flute and clarinet filled the air.

One of the evening’s featured musicians was clarinetist Chris Song, a Korean-American from Texas and now a respected professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). Song currently serves in multiple roles at UAA’s Department of Music—he leads the music education program, conducts the UAA Wind Ensemble, directs the UAA Pep Band, and teaches applied woodwind lessons. His presence added a rich, cultural layer to the evening’s serene atmosphere.

The event not only offered attendees a chance to appreciate art and music but also encouraged support for the protection and appreciation of Alaska’s native bird species. Funds raised will help preserve the habitats of these wild birds and support educational programs.
