수잔 라프란스 앵커리지 시장과 앵커리 지 커뮤니티 개발청(ACDA)은 2025년 ‘Beyond the Beige’ 공공예술 사업의 보조금 수혜자 5팀을 발표했다. 이 사업 은 올해 초 시에서 출범한 공공 예술 이 니셔티브로, 앵커리지의 공공장소를 밝 고 생동감 있는 예술작품으로 채우기 위 한 지역 협력 프로젝트다.

이번에 선정된 다섯 개 프로젝트는 대 부분 지역 비영리단체 및 주민 커뮤니 티 간의 협업을 통해 기획되었으며, 총 10만 달러의 보조금이 ACDA와 시정부 로부터 공동 지원된다. 이 프로젝트들은 공동체 공간의 활력을 높이고 주민 참 여를 촉진한다는 ‘Beyond the Beige’ 정신을 반영하고 있다.

라프란스 시장은 “이 프로그램은 우리 가 사는 장소에 대한 자부심을 바탕으로 한다”며 “공공 예술은 공동체를 연결 하고 일상 속에 기쁨을 불어넣으며, 우 리가 누구인지 서로에게 보여주는 방식 이기도 하다. 함께 참여해준 모든 파트 너, 예술가, 지역 주민들에게 감사드린 다”고 말했다.

‘Beyond the Beige’는 앵커리지의 시 각 정체성과 공공 공간, 창의 경제에 대 한 장기적 투자로, 예술가와 비영리단체, 주민, 공공기관 간의 협업을 장려함으로 써 보다 연결되고 활기찬 도시를 조성하 고자 한다. 이번 1차 수혜 프로젝트 5개 는 다양한 지역사회와 예술 스타일, 주 민 참여 전략을 대표한다.

ACDA 마이크 로빈스 전무이사는 “이 프로젝트들은 앵커리지를 특별하게 만 드는 사람과 장소에 투자할 때 어떤 일 이 가능한지를 보여준다”며 “공공 예 술은 지역 예술가들을 지원하고 유동 인 구를 유도하며, 지역 정체성을 강화함으 로써 경제 활력을 촉진한다. ‘Beyond the Beige’는 단순한 미화사업이 아니 라, 창의성을 공동체 성장으로 연결시 키는 파트너십을 키우고 있다”고 강조 했다.

시장 측은 프로젝트 선정 과정에 참여한 위원회 구성원 모두에게 감사를 전했다. 위원회는 ACDA 전무이사, ACDA 이사 회, 시 예술자문위원회, ACDA 및 시장실 직원들로 구성됐다.

2025년 Beyond the Beige 수상자 및 프 로젝트 소개

· 앵커리지 공원재단 – 야외 예술 프로젝트

알래스카 북모바일, 앵커리지 공원재단, 에어포트 하이츠 및 스패너드 지역위원 회, 알래스카 벽화 프로젝트가 협력해, 1 년간 지역 공원과 산책로에 문화예술 팝 업 행사를 진행한다. 틱키슐라 공원, 키 와니스 피쉬크리크 공원 등에서 시작하 여, 겨울에는 웨스트체스터 라군, 커디 미드타운 공원, 킨케이드 공원 등으로 확대된다.

· McKinley Care LLC & 크리스털 월 –

맥킨리 타워 벽화

유명한 틀링킷/애서배스칸 예술가 크리 스털 월이 ‘연어의 귀환을 꿈꾸는 까 마귀’라는 대형 벽화를 맥킨리 타워 남쪽 외벽에 그린다. 높이 27피트, 너비 41피트 이상의 이 벽화는 앵커리지 중 심가의 외벽을 생생한 예술 공간으로 탈 바꿈시키며, 알래스카 전설 속 동물인 까마귀를 조명한다.

·앵커리지 경제개발공사 – 알래스카 벽화

프로젝트

주택·토지신탁기관과의 협업으로, ‘Welcome to Anchorage’라는 메시 지를 담은 1,100제곱피트 규모의 벽화 를 설치한다. 방문객들에게는 강렬한 첫 인상을, 주민들에게는 따뜻한 환영의 의 미를 전달한다.

지원금: $23,000

· 노스이스트 커뮤니티 위원회 – 기능성 동

물 조형물

알래스카 야생동물에서 영감을 받은 동 물 모양 자전거 거치대를 노스이스트 앵 커리지 공원에 설치한다. 실용성과 놀이 요소를 동시에 갖춘 조형물이다.

· 앵커리지 경제개발공사 & 피치 홀딩스 –

Cabin Fever 공공예술 프로젝트

4번가와 G스트리트에 위치한 블록 41 부지의 건설 펜스를 야외 전시 공간으로 활용해, 40개의 원화 작품을 전시한다. 작품은 커뮤니티에 기증되거나 경매로 판매될 예정이다.

Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and the Anchorage Community Development Authority (ACDA) announced five 2025 grant recipients for Beyond the Beige — a municipal public arts initiative launched earlier this year.

The Beyond the Beige program will bring bright and engaging artwork to Anchorage’s public spaces through community collaboration. Through the initiative, five local projects — most of which are the result of two or more community entities working in partnership — have been selected to receive funding totaling $100,000, awarded jointly by ACDA and the Municipality. These projects reflect the spirit of Beyond the Beige by boosting the vibrancy and appeal of these shared spaces in the community.

“This program is about pride of place,” said Mayor LaFrance. “Public art connects our community, creates joy in everyday places, and reflects who we are to each other. Thank you to all the partners, artists, and neighborhoods working together to show the value and beauty of our community.”

The Beyond the Beige program is a long-term investment in Anchorage’s visual identity, public gathering spaces, and creative economy. By encouraging collaboration between artists, nonprofits, neighborhoods, and civic institutions, the initiative supports a more connected and vibrant Anchorage — one project at a time. The five projects selected in this inaugural round represent a range of neighborhoods, artistic styles, and community engagement strategies.

“These projects exemplify what’s possible when we invest in the people and places that make Anchorage unique,” said Mike Robbins, Executive Director of the Anchorage Community Development Authority. “Public art drives economic vitality by supporting local artists, attracting foot traffic, and strengthening neighborhood identity. Beyond the Beige is not just beautifying our city — it’s fueling partnerships that turn creativity into community growth.” The Mayor would like to thank the entire selection committee for their work in assessing the projects, including the ACDA Executive Director, representatives from the ACDA Board of Directors, the Municipal Arts Advisory Commission, and the ACDA and Mayor’s Office staff.

2025 Beyond the Beige Awardees

Anchorage Park Foundation – Open-Air Art Project

A collaboration between the Alaska

Book Mobile, Anchorage Parks Foundation, Airport Heights and Spenard Community Councils, and the Alaska Mural Project, this year-long initiative will bring art and cultural pop-ups to multiple parks and trails throughout the community. The project is a combination of public art and mobile cultural experiences to help people reimagine parks and trails as spaces for connection, creativity, and year-round gatherings. Initial sites include Tikishla Park and Kiwanis Fish Creek Park, with winter activations at Westchester Lagoon, Cuddy Midtown Park, Kincaid Park, and more.

McKinley Care LLC & Crystal Worl McKinley Tower Mural

Renowned Tlingit/Athabascan artist Crystal Worl will create “Raven Dreams of a Salmon Return,” a large-scale mural on the south face of the historic McKinley Tower. At over 27 feet high and 41 feet wide, this mural will transform a prominent downtown wall into a vibrant work of public art and showcase the raven, one of Alaska’s most legendary protagonists.

Anchorage Economic Development Corporation – Alaska Mural Project

In partnership with the Affordable Housing and Land Trust, this project will deliver a 1,100-square-foot “Welcome to Anchorage” mural, offering a colorful first impression for visitors and a warm, familiar greeting for residents.

Award: $23,000

Northeast Community Council – Functional Animal Sculptures

Local animal-shaped bike racks — inspired by Alaska wildlife — will be installed in Northeast Anchorage parks, supporting both utility and play.

Award: $12,000

Anchorage Economic Development Corporation & Peach Holdings – Cabin Fever Public Art Project

Downtown construction fencing at the Block 41 site on 4th & G Street will become a rotating outdoor gallery, starting with 40 pieces of original art. The 5 by 8-foot pieces will eventually be gifted or auctioned throughout the community. This project transforms a utilitarian space into a platform for local artists.
