스포츠와 문화 교류에 대한 열정이 앵 커리지 한인 커뮤니티를 중심으로 확 산되고 있다. 지난 7월 2일(수), 앵커리 지 한인회(Korean American Community of Anchorage)는 ‘피클볼 플레이 & 런 (Play & Learn)’ 첫 프로그램을 시작하 며, 많은 한인들에게 미국에서 빠르게 인기 있는 라켓 스포츠인 피클볼을 소 개했다.

한인들에게는 첫 도전

이 프로그램은 피클볼을 처음 접하는 이 들을 위해 기획된 입문자 맞춤형 프로그 램으로, 앵커리지 한인회가 주최하고 매 주 수요일 저녁마다 열린다. 참여자들은 기본적인 기술을 배우고 연습하며, 동시 에 사람들과 어울릴 수 있는 기회를 갖 는다. 특히 이번 기회를 통해 피클볼을 처음 경험한 한인들이 많았다.

언제, 어디서 열리나

이 무료 프로그램은 매주 수요일 오후 7 시부터 9시까지, 8월 13일까지 계속된 다. 장소는 **앵커리지 구세군 커뮤니티 센터(Salvation Army Anchorage Corps Community Center, 1701 C Street)**이 다. 주최 측은 라켓, 패들, 공, 코치 지도 까지 전부 무료로 제공해 초보자들도 부 담 없이 참여할 수 있도록 했다.

피클볼의 매력과 커뮤니티 연계

피클볼은 테니스, 배드민턴, 탁구의 장점 을 결합한 스포츠로, 간단한 규칙과 작 은 코트 덕분에 남녀노소 누구나 쉽게 배울 수 있다. 이번 프로그램은 서브, 발 리, 점수 계산 등 기본기를 익히는 짧은 강습 시간과 자유롭게 경기를 즐기는 시 간을 병행하며 구성되었다.

스포츠를 넘어선 문화 연결의 장

이 프로그램은 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 문 화와 세대, 지역사회를 연결하는 다리 역할을 한다. 한인들이 활기찬 분위기 속에서 함께 운동하며 교류하고, 앵커리 지 전반의 커뮤니티와 유대감을 쌓을 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 젊은 직장인부터 자녀, 학부모, 시니어까지 다양한 연령층 이 참여해, 피클볼 코트 위에서 새로운 인연을 만들어가고 있다.

7월 9일, 16일, 23일, 30일과 8월 6일, 13일까지 총 7회의 수업이 남아 있으 며, 처음 접하는 이들과 관심 있는 누구 나 환영한다. 주최 측은 모든 연령과 경 험 수준의 한인들이 참여해 피클볼을 배 우고, 무료 코칭과 간단한 다과도 함께 즐기며 따뜻한 한인 정을 나누길 권장하 고 있다.

‘피클볼 플레이 & 런’은 스포츠, 문 화, 커뮤니티가 하나로 어우러지는 생동 감 넘치는 공간으로, 올 여름 수요일 밤 을 특별하게 만들어줄 것이다.

A fresh wave of enthusiasm for sports and cultural connection is sweeping through Anchorage’s Korean-American community. On Wednesday, July 2, the Korean American Community of Anchorage kicked off its first “Pickleball Play & Learn” evening—an inclusive, beginner-friendly program tailored to introduce Koreans to one of America’s fastest-growing racquet sports.

A First-Time Experience for Many Koreans

Hosted by the Korean-American Community of Anchorage, the weekly event welcomes participants new to pickleball, emphasizing instruction, practice, and social engagement. For many local Koreans, this was their first encounter with the sport.

When, Where & How It Happens

The free program operates every Wednesday from 7 pm to 9 pm through August 13, all hosted at the Salvation Army Anchorage Corps Community Center on 4th Avenue. Organizers provide racquets, paddles, balls, and coaching—all at no cost—to ensure newcomers can focus on learning and enjoying the game rather than sourcing equipment.

Pickleball’s Appeal & Community Connection

Pickleball, a blend of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is lauded for its accessibility and appeal across age groups. With a smaller court and easy-to-learn rules, it’s a natural fit for community sports events that encourage both health and social interaction. The Anchorage event mixes brief learning sessions—covering serving, volleying, and scoring—with structured casual play. This format allows participants to absorb basic techniques before putting them into practice during game time.

Cultural Bridge-Building

More than just a sports program, the initiative represents a cultural bridge. By bringing Korean-Americans together in a relaxed, active environment, the event nurtures community cohesion and builds social ties with the broader Anchorage community. Adults ranging from young professionals, kids, to parents and retirees have all taken to the court, forming friendships one rally at a time.

With seven more Wednesdays remaining—July 9, 16, 23, 30, and August 6 & 13—there’s ample opportunity for both newcomers and curious onlookers to join. Organizers encourage Koreans of all ages and experience levels to try pickleball, enjoy free coaching, and sample light refreshments signaling shared Korean hospitality.
