6월 28일~29일, 팔머 알래스카 주 박람회장에서 열린 전통과 현대의 만남.

지난 주말, 제44회 알래스카 스코틀랜드 하이랜드 게임이 팔머의 알래스카 주 박람회장을 스코틀랜드 전통의 열기로 가득 채웠다. 알래스칸 스코틀랜드 클럽이 주최한 이번 행사는 2025년 6월 28일(토)과 29일(일) 양일간 열렸으며, 수세기 전통을 계승한 경기들과 현대적인 즐길 거리들이 어우러진 활기찬 축제로 꾸며졌다.

스코틀랜드 유산이 살아 숨 쉬는 축제의 주말
이틀간 오전 8시에 게이트가 열렸고, 토요일 오전 10시에는 Cèilidh 극장에서 개막식이 열렸다. 세계적으로 유명한 드
라마 ‘아웃랜더’의 배우이자 명예 족장인 그래험 맥태비시(Graham McTavish)가 축제의 시작을 알렸으며, 같은 날
자신의 브랜드인 맥태비시 스피릿을 소개하는 스토리텔링 및 스카치 시음 행사도 진행했다.

이번 축제에서는 전통적인 하이랜드 게임 경기가 풍성하게 펼쳐졌다. 스톤 토스와 해머 던지기, 데날리 스톤
과 같은 중량 종목 전통적인 킬트 마일 달리기, 줄다리기, 하이랜드 소(Highland coo) 경주, 연어 던지기

하긴스(스코틀랜드 전통 요리) 먹기 대회, 쇼트브레드(버터 쿠키) 베이킹 대회, 미드나잇 선 스퍼틀(Midnight Sun Spurtle) 대회 등 독특한 경기들도 큰 인기를 끌었다. 체력 경기 외에도 문화적 볼거리들이 가득했다.

백파이프와 전통 북 연주
스코틀랜드 하이랜드 댄스 공연 스코틀랜드 부족 모임(Gathering O’ the Clans) 맹금류 시연, 그리고 활기 넘치는 켈트
시장(Celtic Marketplace) 등 다채로운 프로그램이 이어졌다. 음악과 맛, 그리고 공동체의 따뜻한 정
박람회장 곳곳에서는 스코틀랜드 전통 음악이 울려 퍼졌다. 부족 드럼 연주로 유명한 알바넥(Albannach)
포크 록 듀오 하우스 오브 해밀(House of Hamill) 셀틱과 노르딕 음악을 결합한 하프 트윈
즈(Harp Twins, Volfgang Twins)가 무대에올라 관객의 호응을 이끌어냈다. 먹거리와 음료 역시 스코틀랜드의 진수
를 보여주었다.

글렌드로낙(Glendronach), 벤리아크 (Benriach), 글렌글라소(Glenglassaugh), 비어드 브라더스 미드(Beard Brothers Mead) 등 유명 스카치 및 미드(Mead),
버번을 시음할 수 있는 기회가 마련됐다.

티 텐트와 푸드 트럭, 그리고 쇼트브레드 베이커들이 심사위원의 입맛을 사로 잡기 위해 선의의 경쟁을 펼쳤다.

가족 친화적인 즐길 거리와 자원봉사자 들의 헌신 아이들을 위한 체험 프로그램은 물론, ‘야외 교실(Outdoor Classroom)’에서는 역사 교육과 실습 시연이 결합된 독특한 콘텐츠가 제공됐다. 70명 이상의 자원봉사자들이 행사의 원활한 진행과 주차, 캠핑 지원 등을 도우며 2일간의 무료 입장 혜택도 받았다.

지역 사회와 문화의 전통 계승 1982년부터 매년 6월 마지막 주말마다 열리고 있는 하이랜드 게임은 알래스카
를 대표하는 전통 축제로 자리매김해왔다. 1973년에 설립된 비영리 단체인 알래스칸 스코틀랜드 클럽은 알래스카 전
역에서 스코틀랜드의 예술, 운동, 음악, 무용, 유산을 보존하고 알리는 데 앞장 서고 있다.

축제에 참여한 방문객과 주민들은 전통 타탄 무늬 의상을 입고 몰트 위스키를 시음하며, 스톤이 날아가고 백파이프
소리가 울려 퍼지는 장면에 감탄을 금치 못했다.

알래스칸 스코틀랜드 클럽이 1991년에 자체 디자인하고 2013년에 공식 등록한 타탄이 곳곳에서 눈길을 끌기도 했다. 운동의 박진감, 문화의 깊이, 그리고 따뜻한 공동체 정신이 어우러진 이번 알래스카 스코틀랜드 하이랜드 게임은, 스코틀랜드의 유산이 알래스카의 거친 자연 속에서 다시 숨 쉬는 특별한 순간이되었다.

The Scottish spirit swept through Palmer last weekend as the 44th Annual Alaska Scottish Highland Games lit up the Alaska State Fairgrounds on June 28–29, 2025. Hosted by the Alaskan Scottish Club, this celebration brought together centuries-old traditions and modern thrills in a vibrant
two-day festival.

A Festive Weekend of Scottish Heritage
Gates opened at 8:00 AM both days, with an Opening Ceremony kicking off at 10:00 AM at the Cèilidh Theatre on Saturday. Honorary Chieftain Graham McTavish, internationally known for his “Outlander” roles, led the festivities. On Saturday, he also hosted a storytelling and scotch tasting session featuring
McTavish Spirits.

The festival offered a rich program of classic Highland games events:
Heavy athletics including stone and hammer tosses and the Denali stones The iconic Kilted Mile run Tug‑of‑war, Highland coo, and salmon tossing A spirited Haggis eating contest, Short-bread baking competition, and the quirky Midnight Sun Spurtle challenge

Complementing the physical spectacles were cultural highlights: Bagpipe and drum performances, Highland dance, a Gathering O’ the Clans, birds of prey demonstrations, and a lively Celtic marketplace.

Music, Tastes, and Community Spirit
Music echoed throughout the fairgrounds with performances by: Albannach, a tribal‑drumming power-
house The folk‑rock duo House of Hamill Harp Twins (the Volfgang Twins), offering a blend of Celtic and Norse tones.

Food and drink options provided a taste tour of Scotland:
Scotch, mead, and bourbon tastings—including sherry‑cask explorations—with notable labels like
Glendronach, Benriach, Glenglassaugh, and Beard Brothers Mead. A tea tent, food trucks, and shortsbread bakers competed sweetly for judges’ delight.

Family‑Friendly Fun & Volunteer Support
Children’s events provided hands‑on entertainment, while the “Outdoor classroom” brought history to life through hands‑on demonstrations. Over seventy volunteers pitched in, earning free two‑day admission in exchange for helping run the event and managing services like parking and
camping logistics.

A Tradition of Community and Culture
This year’s Games continued a much-loved Alaska event, held every “last weekend in June” at the fairgrounds since 1982 . The Alaskan Scottish Club, a nonprofit founded in 1973, champions Scottish arts, athletics, music, dance, and heritage across Alaska. Participants and spectators marveled
at traditions both ancient and modern. Dressed in tartans woven from Alaskan‑Scottish Club’s own 1991
(and registered in 2013) design, visitors sampled malt whiskies under midnight sunlight and cheered as stones flew and pipers skirled.

The blend of athletic prowess, cultural richness, and warm community spirit cemented the Alaska Scottish Highland Games as a Highland home away from home—where Alaska’s rugged landscape met the rhythms of Scotland’s past, and two cultures melded in
celebration.
