앵커리지, 알래스카 – 추수감사절 아침, 규모 6.0의 지진이 알래스카 남중부 지 역을 강타하며 앵커리지 전역의 주택이 크게 흔들렸다. 이번 지진으로 인해 일 부 일정이 일시적으로 중단되기도 했으 며, 주 및 연방 당국은 큰 피해나 쓰나미 위험은 보고되지 않았다고 밝혔다. 미국지질조사국(USGS)은 이번 지진이 오전 8시 17분경, 앵커리지 북쪽 매트수 보로(Matanuska-Susitna Borough) 인근 에서 발생했다고 발표했다. 앵커리지, 이 글 리버, 와실라, 팔머는 물론 키나이 반 도 일대 주민들도 몇 초간 이어진 강하 고 구르는 듯한 흔들림을 감지했다고 전 했다.

알래스카 지진센터는 이번 지진의 발생 깊이를 약 25마일(약 40km) 로 분석하 며, 넓은 지역에서 감지될 만큼 깊었지 만 분명한 진동을 느낄 수 있을 정도로 얕았다고 설명했다.

큰 피해는 없었지만 강한 흔들림 비록 강한 지진이었지만, 긴급 대응 당 국은 심각한 피해, 부상, 또는 대규모 정 전 신고는 접수되지 않았다고 밝혔다.

앵커리지 경찰국과 소방국에는 주민들 이 건물 구조를 걱정하는 문의가 일부 들어왔으나, 확인된 피해는 없었다. 알래스카 지진센터는 이번 지진이 2021 년 이후 남중부 지역에서 발생한 가 장 큰 규모의 지진이라고 평가했지 만, 2016년과 2018년에 발생한 규모 7.1·7.0 지진에 비해서는 피해가 훨씬 적었다고 분석했다.

전문가들은 특히 다음과 같은 기본 비상 용품 준비를 권고하고 있다:

· 손전등 및 여분의 배터리

· 구급약품 키트

· 휴대폰 보조배터리 또는 충전기

· 호루라기(구조 요청용)

· 먼지 마스크, 장갑, 튼튼한 신발

· 필수 의약품

· 중요한 서류(방수 보관 필수)

쓰나미 위험은 없어

지진이 내륙에서 발생한 만큼, 국가 쓰 나미 경보센터는 이번 지진으로 인한 쓰 나미 위험은 없다고 확인했다.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Southcentral Alaska on Thursday morning, shaking homes across the Anchorage area and prompting temporary disruptions during the Thanksgiving holiday. No major damage or tsunami threat was reported, according to state and federal officials.

The quake occurred at approximately 8:17 a.m., with an epicenter located north of Anchorage near the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Residents from Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer, and even communities along the Kenai Peninsula reported feeling strong, rolling motions lasting several seconds.

The Alaska Earthquake Center said the quake originated at a depth of roughly 25 miles, deep enough to be widely felt but shallow enough to produce noticeable shaking.

No Major Damage, But Plenty of Shaking

Despite the strength of the quake, emergency officials said there were no immediate reports of serious damage, injuries, or power outages. Anchorage police and fire departments received scattered calls from residents checking on possible structural concerns, but no significant incidents were confirmed. The Alaska Earthquake Center described the event as the largest quake to hit the region since 2021, though far less damaging than the 7.1 and 7.0 earthquakes that struck the Anchorage area in 2016 and 2018.

Many Alaskans took to social media to share videos of swaying lights, rattling windows, and startled pets. Some Thanksgiving gatherings paused as families checked on one another and waited for aftershocks. A series of small aftershocks, mostly below magnitude 3.0, followed throughout the day.

Experts Remind Public of Earthquake Preparedness

Geologists noted that Southcentral Alaska is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, located along the boundary of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Earthquake experts said events of this size are not unusual for the region. State officials used the moment to remind residents to keep emergency kits stocked and review earthquake safety practices such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”

“Even moderate earthquakes can be a good reminder that preparedness saves lives,” the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said in a statement. Experts recommend keeping a basic emergency kit stocked with:

· Bottled water (at least 3 days’ supply per person)

· Non-perishable food

· Flashlight and extra batteries

· First-aid kit

· Portable phone charger or power bank

· Whistle to signal for help

· Dust masks, gloves, and sturdy shoes

· Necessary medications

· Important documents in a waterproof container

No Tsunami Danger

Because the quake occurred inland, the National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami threat was associated with the event.

A Jolt on a Holiday Morning

For many in the region, the morning jolt added an unexpected twist to the holiday. Still, with no significant damage reported, residents expressed relief that the effects were limited to a brief scare and a reminder of Alaska’s ever-present seismic activity.
