이번 폭풍은 일요일 늦은 밤부터 월요일 새벽까지 이어졌으며, 자치구 여러 지역 에서 시속 70~85마일(약 113~137km) 에 달하는 강풍이 관측되었다. 극심한 기상 조건으로 나무가 쓰러지고, 지붕과 전력선이 손상되었으며, 지역 전역에서 위험한 도로 상황이 발생했다.

수만 가구 정전 피해

지역 전력 회사들에 따르면 폭풍이 가장 강했던 시점에는 수만 명의 매트수 주민 들이 정전 피해를 겪었다. 복구팀이 밤 낮없이 작업했지만 피해 규모가 커 복구 작업은 장시간 이어졌으며, 특히 쓰러진 나무로 도로가 막힌 산림 지역과 외곽 지역의 피해가 컸다.

지속되는 정전과 도로 위험으로 인해 매 탄수카-수스티나 교육구는 월요일 전 체 휴교를 결정해 팔머(Palmer), 와실라 (Wasilla), 빅 레이크(Big Lake) 등 여러 지 역 학교가 문을 닫았다. 수스티나 밸리 지역 일부 학교만 정상 운영되었으며, 방과 후 프로그램과 운동 활동도 모두 중단되었다.

교육구 관계자들은 여러 학교 건물이 월 요일 아침까지도 여전히 난방과 전기가 공급되지 않고 있어 상황을 계속 평가 중이라고 밝혔다.

기반 시설 및 재산 피해

공공시설팀은 잔해, 쓰러진 나무, 도로 차단 등 수많은 피해 신고에 대응했다. 일부 주거 지역에서는 외벽 파손, 지붕 일부 탈락, 깨진 창문, 차량 피해 등 구 조적 피해도 확인되었다. 다행히 큰 부 상자는 보고되지 않았지만, 긴급 구조대 는 위험 상황과 관련된 여러 신고를 처 리했다.

정전과 피해로 인해 많은 소규모 사업장 도 영업을 중단해야 했으며, 지역 식당 과 식료품점에서는 장기 정전에 대비하 려는 주민들로 얼음, 발전기, 간편 조리 식품 수요가 급증했다.

관계자들 “복구 작업 계속… 주의 필요”

자치구 관계자들은 이번 돌풍이 최근 몇 년간 매트수 지역을 강타한 가장 심각 한 폭풍 중 하나라고 평가하며, 복구 작 업이 이번 주 내내 계속될 것이라고 밝 혔다. 또한 주민들에게 쓰러진 전력선에 접근하지 말고 복구팀이 안전하게 작업 할 수 있도록 협조해달라고 강조했다.

“일부 지역은 피해 규모에 따라 정전 이 장기화될 수 있습니다. 주민 여러분 의 인내와 협조를 부탁드립니다.” 관계자는 이렇게 전했다.

지역사회 지원 활발

어려운 상황 속에서도 지역 주민들은 빠 르게 움직여 피해자들에게 따뜻한 공간, 이동 수단, 식사 제공 등 다양한 지원을 펼쳤다. 지역 교회와 자원봉사 단체들도 자치구와 협력해 담요, 따뜻한 음료, 긴 급 구호 물품을 배포했다.

현재도 복구 작업이 진행 중인 가운데, 자치구는 주민들에게 공식 공지사항을 수시로 확인하고, 비상용품을 준비하며, 추가 겨울 폭풍에 대비해 야외 물건을 단단히 고정해 둘 것을 권고하고 있다.

Alaska — A powerful windstorm swept through the Mat-Su region this week, bringing hurricane-force gusts, widespread power outages, school closures, and significant damage across one of Alaska’s fastest-growing communities.

The storm struck late Sunday into early Monday, with wind gusts reported between 70 and 85 miles per hour in several parts of the borough. The extreme conditions toppled trees, damaged roofs and power lines, and created hazardous travel conditions throughout the region.

Thousands Without Power

At the height of the storm, tens of thousands of Mat-Su residents were left without electricity, according to local utilities. Repair crews worked around the clock, but the scale of the damage caused extended outages, particularly in rural and wooded neighborhoods where downed trees blocked access roads. The Mat-Su Borough opened emergency shelters to help residents who faced freezing temperatures without heat. Officials urged the public to limit travel, report downed lines, and check on neighbors, especially seniors and vulnerable households.

School Closures Across the Borough

Due to ongoing power outages and road hazards, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District canceled classes on Monday, affecting schools in Palmer, Wasilla, Big Lake, and other communities. Only a portion of Susitna Valley schools remained open. After-school programs and athletic activities were also suspended.

District officials said they would continue to evaluate conditions, noting that several buildings remained without heat or electricity as of Monday morning.

Infrastructure and Property Damage

Public works crews responded to numerous reports of debris, fallen trees, and blocked roadways. Some residential areas experienced structural damage, including ripped siding and shingles, smashed windows, and damaged vehicles. While no major injuries were reported, emergency responders handled multiple calls related to hazardous conditions.

The storm also impacted small businesses, many of which were forced to close due to power loss or damage. Local restaurants and grocery stores reported spikes in demand for ice, generators, and stovetop-ready foods as residents prepared for prolonged outages.

Officials Urge Caution as Repairs Continue

Borough officials described the windstorm as one of the most severe Mat-Su has experienced in recent years, emphasizing that recovery efforts will continue through the week. They warned residents to stay clear of downed power lines and give utility crews space to work.

“Some areas may experience extended outages depending on the level of damage,” officials said. “We are asking for patience and cooperation as crews work as quickly and safely as possible.”

Community Support Ramps Up

Despite the challenges, community members mobilized quickly, offering warm spaces, transportation, and meals to those affected. Local churches and volunteer groups collaborated with the borough to distribute blankets, hot drinks, and emergency supplies. As cleanup continues, residents are encouraged to monitor official borough updates, prepare emergency kits, and secure loose outdoor items in anticipation of additional winter storms.
