앵커리지 한인 커뮤니티의 존경받는 리 더이자 NEXGEN을 이끄는 에밀리 조 (Emily Cho)가 최근 진행된 자매도시 외 교 사절단 일정에 참여해 한국을 방문하 며 한인 청년·청년층을 대표했다.

조 위원은 앵커리지 자매도시 위원회의 일원으로서 스즈앤 라프랑스 앵커리지 시장, 크리스토퍼 콘스턴트 시의회 의장, 지역 비즈니스 대표 및 커뮤니티 리더들 과 함께 인천과 부산을 방문해 교역· 관광·문화 교류 강화를 통한 국제 협 력 확대를 목표로 한 일정을 소화했다.

글로벌 연계를 강화하는 자매도시 교류

1956년에 설립된 자매도시 프로그램은 시민 외교를 통해 세계 각 도시 간 상호 이해와 협력을 증진하는 데 목적이 있 다. 오랜 기간 일본 치토세시, 한국 인천 시와 파트너십을 이어온 앵커리지는 이 번 방문을 통해 문화적·경제적 연계 강화의 기회를 마련했다.

방문 기간 중 앵커리지 시의 빌 폴시(Bill Falsey) 최고행정책임자(CAO)는 부산광 역시와 관광·항만·물류·문화교류 협력 확대를 위한 양해각서(LOI)에 서명 해 향후 양 도시 간 협력을 한층 강화할 뜻을 밝혔다.

차세대를 대표하는 리더십

NEXGEN 리더로서 에밀리 조는 한인 차 세대의 교육, 커뮤니티 참여, 시민 의식 함양을 핵심 목표로 활동하고 있다.

그녀의 이번 외교 사절단 참여는 앵커리 지 한인 청년들이 지역사회와 국제 무대 에서 더욱 중요한 목소리를 내고 있음을 보여주는 상징적 사례로 평가된다.

에밀리 조와 함께, 과거 ‘트윈 시스터 시티즈 위원회’에서 활동했던 여현 파 도 이번 방문에 동행했습니다.

여현 파의 참여는 한인들이 지역사회 활 동에 적극적으로 참여하는 것의 중요성 을 보여주었을 뿐만 아니라, 한국과의 교류를 이어가는 데 있어 한인 커뮤니티 가 리더십을 발휘하고 있음을 잘 보여주 었습니다.

앵커리지의 글로벌 입지 확대

사절단은 인천시 부시장과 부산시 미래 혁신 부시장을 비롯한 관계자들을 만나 관광, 수산업, 항공 화물, 해양 무역 분야 의 협력 강화 방안을 논의했다.

특히 물류와 수산업 분야에서 북미와 아 시아를 잇는 관문 도시로서의 앵커리지 의 전략적 중요성이 강조됐다.

이러한 논의는 향후 경제·문화 분야 교류 확장을 위한 토대를 마련했다는 점 에서 의미가 크다.

영감을 주는 문화 외교와 리더십

사절단의 가장 젊은 리더 중 한 명인 에 밀리 조의 참여는 세대 간 리더십의 중 요성과 한인 커뮤니티의 지속적인 참여 를 상징한다.

NEXGEN과 자매도시 위원회에서의 그 녀의 활동은 지역사회 봉사와 국제 협력 에 대한 깊은 헌신을 보여주며, 이번 방문을 통해 조 위원은 앵커리지와 한국 간의 연결고리를 강화한 것은 물 론, 차세대에게 외교, 리더십, 문화적 자 긍심을 고취시키는 역할을 수행했다.

Anchorage, AK — November 2025 Emily Cho, a respected leader within Anchorage’s Korean American community leader of NEXGEN, represented both the youth and young adults of the Korean American community during a recent Sister Cities diplomatic mission to South Korea.

As a member of the Anchorage Sister Cities Commission, Cho joined Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance, Assembly Chair Christopher Constant, and a delegation of business representatives and community leaders for an international visit to Incheon and Busan, South Korea. The trip aimed to promote Anchorage’s global relationships through trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

Building Global Connections

The Sister Cities program, founded in 1956, was designed to promote citizen diplomacy, encouraging mutual understanding and cooperation between cities around the world. For Anchorage, which shares long-standing partnerships with Chitose, Japan, and Incheon, South Korea, the visit served as an opportunity to deepen cross-cultural and economic ties.

During the visit, the Municipality’s Chief Administrative Officer, Bill Falsey, signed a Letter of Intent with Busan, South Korea, committing to further collaboration in tourism, maritime ports, logistics, and cultural exchange.

Representing the Next Generation

In her role as NEXGEN leader, Emily Cho focuses on empowering the next generation of Korean Americans through community involvement, education, and civic engagement. Her participation in the delegation symbolized the growing presence of young Korean Americans in Anchorage’s civic and international affairs.

Emily Cho was also joined by Yohyon Pharr, who formerly served on the Twin Sister Cities Commission.

Yohyon’s participation has shown the importance of Korean Americans participating in community support while also providing leadership in connecting with Koreans.

Strengthening Anchorage’s Global Presence

Throughout the trip, the delegation met with Incheon’s Vice Mayor and the Vice Mayor for Future Innovation in Busan, discussing ways to expand cooperation in tourism, seafood, air cargo, and maritime trade. The meetings highlighted Anchorage’s strategic role as an international gateway between North America and Asia, particularly in the logistics and seafood industries. By participating in these diplomatic exchanges, Emily Cho and the Anchorage delegation helped reinforce the city’s global partnerships, laying the groundwork for future collaboration in both economic and cultural fields.

Inspiring Leadership and Cultural Diplomacy

As one of the youngest leaders in the delegation, Emily Cho’s involvement underscores the importance of intergenerational leadership and the continued participation of Korean Americans in shaping Anchorage’s global identity. Her leadership within NEXGEN and the Sister Cities Commission reflects a deep commitment to both community service and international cooperation. Through this journey, Cho not only strengthened Anchorage’s global connections but also inspired the next generation to embrace diplomacy, leadership, and cultural pride—bridging Alaska and Korea in meaningful ways that will last for years to come.
