앵커리지, 알래스카 – 앵커리지 교육구 (Anchorage School District, ASD)가 대규 모 예산 부족과 ‘적정 규모 조정(right-sizing)’ 계획의 일환으로 2025-26학 년도 말에 여러 초등학교를 폐쇄하는 방 안을 검토하고 있다고 교육 당국이 이번 주 확인했다.

폐쇄 검토 대상 학교

파이어 레이크 초등학교 – 이전에도 폐 쇄 가능성 목록에 올랐으며, 현재 등록 학생 수 기준으로 약 절반 수준만 채워 진 상태로 알려졌다.

레이크 오티스 초등학교 – 지난해 논 의에 이어 다시 폐쇄 검토 대상에 포함 됐다.

캠벨 STEM 초등학교 – 과학, 기술, 공 학, 수학(STEM) 교육에 특화된 알래스카 최초의 학교로, 최근 학부모들에게 충분 한 사전 공지 없이 폐쇄 목록에 추가되 면서 논란이 일고 있다.

특히 캠벨 STEM 초등학교의 경우, 이전 논의에 포함되지 않았던 것으로 알고 있 던 학부모들과 지역사회 구성원들 사이 에서 우려의 목소리가 커지고 있다.

폐쇄 검토 배경

교육구는 학교 폐쇄가 운영 비용 절감 을 목표로 하고 있으며, 초등학교 한 곳 당 약 90만 달러의 예산 절감 효과가 있 을 것으로 예상하고 있다고 밝혔다. 또 한 학생 등록 추세와 재정 상황에 맞춰 시설을 재조정하기 위한 조치라고 설명 했다.

이와 함께 일부 학교를 차터 스쿨 프로그램으로 전환하거나, 오말리 (O’Malley)와 거버먼트 힐(Government Hill) 등 일부 학교의 이중언어 몰입 프로 그램 및 특화 프로그램을 조정하는 방안 도 제시됐다.

향후 일정

앵커리지 교육위원회는 2월 24일(화) 정 기회의에서 해당 폐쇄안에 대한 표결을 진행할 예정이다. 이날 회의에서는 지역 주민과 학부모들이 공개 발언을 통해 의 견을 제시할 기회도 주어진다.

만약 폐쇄안이 승인될 경우, 해당 학교 학생들은 다음 학년도에 인근 학교로 재 배정될 예정이다. 통학 및 학급 배치에 관한 구체적인 사항은 교육구가 추후 안 내할 계획이다.

Schools on the Closure List

Fire Lake Elementary — Previously listed for potential closure and approximately half full based on enrollment figures.

Campbell STEM Elementary — Alaska’s first school with a specific focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, was recently added to the closure list with limited advance notice for families.

Parents and community members have expressed concern, especially over the inclusion of Campbell STEM, which many believed had not been on earlier closure discussions.

Why the Closures Are Being Considered

The district says the closures are intended to reduce operational costs — with each elementary school closure expected to save roughly $900,000 per school — and to better align school facilities with student enrollment trends and financial realities.

Officials also outlined additional recommended changes, including repurposing some schools for charter programs and adjusting language immersion and other specialized programs at schools like O’Malley and Government Hill.

What Happens Next

The Anchorage School Board is scheduled to vote on the proposed closures at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 24, where community members will also have a chance to offer public testimony.

If the closures are approved, students from the affected schools would be reassigned to neighboring schools for the upcoming school year, with details about transportation and class placements to be provided by the district.

Community Reaction

Local Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) at the schools being considered for closure have mobilized to voice their concerns, citing limited notice and concerns over community impact.
