알래스카 앵커리지 – 알래스카 Don Young Port of Alaska의 화물 터미널 1(T1) 교체 공사가 공식적으로 시작됐 다. 수잔 라프랑스(Suzanne LaFrance) 시장이 공사 착수를 위한 ‘착공 승인 통지(Notice to Proceed)’를 발행하면 서, 대규모 항만 현대화 사업의 중요한 이정표가 마련됐다.

이번 착공은 알래스카 최대 물류 관문인 항만을 재건하는 Port of Alaska Modernization Program의 핵심 단계로, 향후 장기적인 식량·화물·연료 공급 안정 성을 확보하는 데 목적이 있다.

라프랑스 시장은 “오늘은 축하할 순 간”이라며 “돈 영 항만은 우리 주 전 체의 생명선과도 같은 존재이며, 지진 에도 견딜 수 있는 현대식 화물 터미널 건설을 공식적으로 시작하게 됐다. 이 번 프로젝트는 향후 70년간 안정적이고 효율적으로 알래스카 주민들을 지원할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

앵커리지 시의회 의장 크리스 콘스턴트 (Chris Constant) 역시 “수많은 어려움 과 도전을 극복하며 이 자리에 도달했 다”며 “터미널 1 착공은 알래스카 전 체의 승리”라고 강조했다.

시장 승인 이후, 시공업체들은 즉시 육 상 공사를 시작했다. 초기 작업에는 다 음이 포함된다:

현장 준비(Mobilization): 대규모 공사를 위한 사무실 설치 및 공사 구역 구획 지반 준비(Ground Preparation): 3월 16 일부터 동토 해빙 장비 설치 및 굴착 준 비 토공 작업(Earthwork): 신규 트레슬 1A 인근 지반 개량을 위한 굴착 및 임시 구조물 설치 철거(Demolition): 기존 터미 널 1 구조물 해체

다음 주요 단계는 오는 5월로 예정되 어 있으며, 길이 240피트의 파일(piling) 을 실은 첫 바지선이 북측 확장 구역에 도착할 예정이다. 해상 공사는 5월 중순 또는 6월 초부터 시작되며, 새로운 터미 널 북측에서 파일 항타 작업이 진행될 계획이다.

공사가 본격화됨에 따라 항만 인근에서 는 대형 공사 차량과 중장비 이동이 증 가할 것으로 예상된다. 앵커리지 시는 통근자와 주민들에게 공사 구역 주변에 서 변화하는 교통 흐름에 주의할 것을 당부했다.

돈 영 알래스카 항만 소개

돈 영 알래스카 항만은 주 내 소비재, 건 설 자재, 식량, 연료 대부분을 처리하는 핵심 인프라다. 또한 미 국방부에 의해 전략적 상업 항구로 지정되어 북극 지역 및 전 세계에서 미군의 작전 수행을 지 원하는 중요한 역할을 한다.

터미널 1 교체 사업은 항만 노후 부두를 전면 교체하는 장기 프로젝트의 일환이 며, 전체 현대화 사업의 핵심 단계로 평 가된다. 터미널 1 공사는 2029년 완공 을 목표로 진행될 예정이다.

Work to replace Cargo Terminal 1 (T1) at the Don Young Port of Alaska officially began Monday, after Mayor Suzanne LaFrance issued the Notice to Proceed with construction. This groundbreaking marks a critical milestone for the massive Port of Alaska Modernization Program, which will rebuild Alaska’s primary inbound cargo port and ensure long-term food, cargo, and fuel security for the state.

“This is a moment to celebrate. The Don Young Port of Alaska is a lifeline for our entire state, and we are officially breaking ground on a modern, seismically resilient cargo terminal. This project will ensure the port is functional, efficient, and serving Alaskans for the next 70 years,” said Mayor LaFrance. “The journey to this moment has been a long saga of pitfalls and challenges, met at every turn by sheer determination and grit – and today, the Port of Alaska Modernization Program is finally on a clear track to success,” said Assembly Chair Chris Constant. “Breaking ground on Terminal 1 is a win for our entire state. I want to thank everyone who has supported this effort to date.”

Following the Mayor’s authorization, contractors began landside preparations. Initial work includes: Mobilization: Setting up contractor offices and site delineation to manage the massive scale of the Terminal 1 build.

Ground Preparation: Placement of ground-thaw heaters began on March 16 to prepare for excavation in the subarctic conditions.

Earthwork: Excavation and the installation of temporary pads for ground improvement work near the new Trestle 1A are beginning. Demolition: Taking down the existing terminal one.

The project will reach its next milestone in May, when the first barges carrying 240-foot pilings are expected to arrive at the North Extension. Marine operations are expected to begin in mid-May or early June with pile-driving at the north side of the new terminal. As construction intensifies, the public should expect an increase in work truck traffic and heavy equipment movement in the vicinity of the Port. The Municipality advises commuters and residents to exercise caution and remain alert to changing traffic patterns near the construction zone.
