미국 이민세관단속국(ICE)은 조지아주 엘라벨(Ellabell)에 건설 중인 현대-LG 배 터리 공장 현장에서 대규모 단속을 벌여 약 475명을 체포했다. 체포된 인원 대부 분은 한국 국적자로 알려졌다. 이번 작 전은 미 국토안보부 역사상 단일 현장에 서 이루어진 최대 규모의 이민 단속으로 기록되고 있다.

ICE에 따르면 이번 단속은 수개월간의 수사 끝에 법원의 수색영장을 발부받아 진행됐다. 위장복을 입은 요원들을 포함 한 단속반이 공사현장에 진입해 불법 고 용 혐의로 근로자들을 체포했다.

보도에 따르면 체포된 한국인 중 일부는 적법한 비자를 소지하지 않았거나 비자 기간을 초과 체류했으며, 관광비자 등 근로가 불가능한 비자로 입국한 뒤 불법 취업한 경우도 포함된 것으로 알려졌다.

현대자동차와 LG에너지솔루션은 공동 성명을 통해 “체포된 인원 중 직접 고 용된 직원은 없으며 대부분 하청업체 근 로자”라고 밝혔으나, 이후 LG 계열사 소속 직원 수십 명이 포함된 것으로 확 인됐다.

이에 대해 한국 정부는 즉각 우려를 표 명하며 “우리 국민과 한국 기업의 경제 활동이 미국 법 집행 과정에서 부당하게 침해되어서는 안 된다”고 강조했다. 현 재 서울은 워싱턴 주재 한국대사관과 애 틀랜타 총영사관을 중심으로 긴급 지원 팀을 구성하고 현지 대응에 나섰다.

이번 단속은 현대와 LG가 공동으로 추 진하는 전기차 핵심 투자 프로젝트라는 점에서 한·미 간 주요 외교·경제 현 안으로 부상하고 있다. 한국 정부는 한 국인 구금자 석방 지원과 함께 향후 비 자 제도 개선 방안을 모색하겠다고 밝 혔다.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out a large-scale raid at the Hyundai–LG battery plant construction site in Ellabell, Georgia, on September 4th, detaining around 475 workers. Most of those detained were Korean nationals. The operation is now considered the largest single-site immigration enforcement action in the history of the Department of Homeland Security. According to ICE, the raid followed months of investigation and was conducted under a court-issued search warrant. Agents, some in disguise, entered the construction site and detained workers on allegations of illegal employment.

Reports indicate that some of the detained Koreans were working without proper visas, had overstayed their visas, or had entered on non-work visas such as tourist visas, and were employed illegally.

Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution stated in a joint press release that none of the detainees were directly employed by them, but rather were subcontractor workers. However, it was later confirmed that several dozen employees from LG affiliates were among those taken into custody.

The South Korean government quickly expressed concern, stating that “the economic activities of our citizens and Korean companies must not be unfairly disrupted in the course of U.S. law enforcement.” Seoul has mobilized its embassy in Washington and the consulate in Atlanta to provide emergency assistance and monitor the situation closely.

The raid has become a major diplomatic and economic issue between the U.S. and South Korea, as the plant is a flagship electric vehicle investment project jointly developed by Hyundai and LG. Seoul has also begun efforts to secure the release of detained nationals and to pursue improvements to visa procedures moving forward.
