퍼 론디(Fur Rondy), 이디타로드 시작과 함께 알래스카 겨울 축제 열기 고조 앵커리지, 알래스카 – 앵커리지 도심 이 이번 주 연례 겨울 축제인 퍼 론디 (Fur Rendezvous Festival, 일명 ‘Fur Rondy’)로 활기를 띠며, 알래스카의 대표적인 전통 행사인 이디타로드 개썰 매 경주(Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race)의 시작을 알렸다.

알래스카에서 가장 오래되고 사랑받는 겨울 축제 중 하나인 퍼 론디는 매년 수 천 명의 주민들과 관광객들을 앵커리지 도심으로 불러 모은다. 축제 기간 동안 에는 눈 조각 대회, 론디 카니발, 아웃하 우스 경주(이동식 화장실 경주), 다양한 겨울 스포츠 경기, 그리고 ‘Running of the Reindeer(순록 달리기)’와 같은 인 기 행사들이 열린다. 이 행사는 참가자 들이 도심 거리에서 순록과 함께 달리는 독특한 이벤트로 많은 관람객들의 관심 을 끌고 있다.

퍼 론디 축제는 1935년에 처음 시작됐 다. 당시 겨울 동안 외딴 지역에서 일하 던 광부와 덫 사냥꾼들이 앵커리지로 돌 아오는 시기에 맞춰 작은 겨울 축제로 시작되었다. 이후 수십 년 동안 성장하 면서 알래스카의 역사와 공동체 정신, 그리고 겨울을 즐기는 문화를 기념하는 대규모 행사로 자리 잡았다.

이 축제는 또한 ‘지구상 마지막 위 대한 경주(The Last Great Race on Earth)’로 불리는 이디타로드 개썰매 경주의 시작을 알리는 행사이기도 하다.

2026년 이디타로드 경주는 3월 7일(토) 오전 10시 앵커리지 다운타운 4번가에 서 열린 공식 출발식(세레모니얼 스타 트)으로 시작되었으며, 수많은 관람객들 의 환호 속에 머셔(musher)들과 개썰매 팀들이 출발했다.

앵커리지에서 열리는 출발식은 상징적 인 행사로, 팬들이 머셔들과 개썰매 팀 을 가까이에서 만날 수 있는 기회를 제 공한다. 실제 기록이 시작되는 공식 레 이스는 3월 8일(일) 알래스카 윌로우 (Willow)에서 재출발(restart)하며, 머셔들 은 이곳에서부터 약 1,000마일에 달하 는 노메(Nome)까지의 본격적인 경주를 시작하게 된다.

1973년에 처음 시작된 이디타로드는 알 래스카의 역사적인 개썰매 우편 운송로 와 1925년 디프테리아가 유행했을 당 시 노메로 긴급 혈청을 전달했던 ‘세 럼 런(Serum Run)’을 기념하기 위해 만들어졌다.

세레모니얼 스타트를 보기 위해 많은 시 민들이 추운 날씨에도 불구하고 거리 로 나와 머셔들과 개썰매 팀들을 응원 했다. 많은 알래스카 주민들에게 이 행 사는 단순한 스포츠 대회를 넘어, 개썰 매 전통과 개척 정신, 그리고 머셔와 썰 매개 사이의 깊은 유대감을 기념하는 의 미를 지닌다.

퍼 론디 축제가 계속되는 가운데, 이 행 사는 앵커리지의 독특한 겨울 문화와 전 세계의 관심을 끄는 전설적인 이디타로 드 경주와의 깊은 연결성을 다시 한번 보여주고 있다.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Anchorage came alive with winter excitement this week as the city celebrated the annual Fur Rendezvous Festival, commonly known as “Fur Rondy,” marking the start of one of Alaska’s most famous traditions — the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Fur Rondy, one of Alaska’s oldest and most beloved winter festivals, draws thousands of residents and visitors to downtown Anchorage each year. The festival features a wide variety of events, including snow sculpture competitions, the Rondy carnival, outhouse races, winter sports competitions, and the popular Running of the Reindeer, where participants race down city streets alongside reindeer.

Originally founded in 1935, Fur Rondy began as a small winter celebration when miners and trappers returned to Anchorage after months in remote areas. Over the decades, it has grown into a major cultural event that celebrates Alaska’s history, community spirit, and love for winter.

The festival also serves as a lead-up to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, often called the “Last Great Race on Earth.” The 2026 Iditarod officially began with its ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage on Saturday, March 7, at 10 a.m., where mushers and their dog teams departed along Fourth Avenue to the cheers of thousands of spectators.

The ceremonial start in Anchorage is largely symbolic, allowing fans to meet the mushers and see the teams before the official race begins. The official restart took place on Sunday, March 8, in Willow, Alaska, where mushers began the timed portion of the nearly 1,000-mile journey to Nome across some of the most rugged wilderness in North America.

The Iditarod, first established in 1973, honors Alaska’s historic dog-sled mail routes and the famous 1925 serum run to Nome, when sled dog teams delivered lifesaving medicine during a diphtheria outbreak.

Crowds lined the streets of Anchorage for the ceremonial start despite cold winter temperatures, cheering for mushers and their teams as they launched their long journey across Alaska. For many locals, the event represents more than a sporting competition — it is a celebration of Alaska’s frontier heritage, endurance, and the deep bond between mushers and their sled dogs.

As Fur Rondy continues throughout the week, the festival remains a reminder of Anchorage’s unique winter culture and its connection to the legendary Iditarod race that captures the attention of people around the world.
