Federal authorities have seized the Chelsea Inn Hotel, located in Anchorage’s Spenard neighborhood, following years of investigation into suspected drug-related activity and violence at the premises.

What Happened?

On August 22, 2025, the FBI and Anchorage Police executed search warrants at the Chelsea Inn and two residential properties tied to the hotel’s owner and manager. The raid resulted in the seizure of the building itself and the shutdown of operations. Numerous firearms, large quantities of drugs, ammunition, and more than $45,000 in cash were confiscated.

Court records indicate that the investigation began in October 2020, spurred by the murder of Duane Fields Jr., a hotel employee and the father of manager Chantel Fields. Surveillance from that incident reportedly showed Fields removing guns and drugs from her father’s body before police arrival.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Kyoung Seo, 62, owner of Chelsea Inn, and Chantel Lynn Fields, 36, its manager, were both arrested and charged with conspiracy to maintain a drug-involved premises.

At their court appearances, both pleaded not guilty. Fields remains in custody pending a detention hearing; Seo was granted pretrial release.

Prosecutors also filed a civil forfeiture complaint seeking to seize ownership interests in the hotel.

Scope of Allegations and Community Impact

Law enforcement alleges that the hotel served as a hub for drug distribution, with Fields allegedly charging a $20 admission fee to individuals seeking access to narcotics or prostitution. Dealers reportedly lived and sold drugs on-site.

In addition to drugs and firearms, investigators found evidence of significant violent crime at the hotel. In the past five years, Anchorage Police responded to over 1,000 calls at the property, ranging from drug crimes to domestic violence and homicides.

Neighbors described the Chelsea Inn as more of a “drug house masquerading as a hotel,” expressing relief at its closure after witnessing years of neighborhood safety decline.

Broader Context

This is believed to be the first time a hotel in Alaska has been seized by federal agents under allegations of enabling drug trafficking. The action is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting violent crime, cartel activity, and drug trafficking.
