지난 7월 25일(목), 앵커리지 메리어트 호텔에서는 한국전 정전협정 72주년을 기념하는 특별한 오찬 리셉션이 열렸다. 이번 행사는 알래스카 출신 한국전 참전 용사들의 용기와 희생을 기리는 뜻깊은 자리로, 참전용사들과 그 가족들, 지역 사회 지도자들이 함께 모여 봉사와 기억 의 의미를 되새겼다.

주앵커리지 대한민국 총영사관이 주최 한 이번 오찬은 1950년부터 1953년까 지 치러진 한국전쟁 당시 미군, 특히 알 래스카 출신 장병들의 결정적인 역할을 기리기 위해 마련됐다. 1953년 7월 27 일에 체결된 한국전 정전협정은 한반도 에서의 전면적인 교전을 종식시킨 휴전 협정이다. 비록 공식적인 평화조약은 체 결되지 않았지만, 이 협정은 현재까지도 남북한 간 긴장 속의 평화를 유지하는 기반이 되고 있다.

이날 행사에는 주앵커리지 총영사관 관 계자, 시 정부 인사, 한인 커뮤니티 대표, 참전용사 단체 대표 등이 연사로 나서 참전용사들에게 깊은 감사의 마음을 전 했다. 연사들은 “용사들의 용기가 없었다 면 오늘날의 대한민국은 존재하지 않았 을 것”이라며 그들의 희생이 오늘날 자 유롭고 번영한 대한민국을 가능하게 했 다고 강조했다.

이 행사에서는 전통 한국 부채춤을 선보 인 윤사라 씨의 공연이 있었으며, 이어 점심 리셉션이 진행되었습니다. 또한 일 부 참석자들은 복무 시절의 이야기를 나 누며, 종종 “잊혀진 전쟁”이라고 불리는 한국전에 대한 개인적인 회상을 공유하 기도 했습니다.

한국전쟁에는 약 180만 명의 미군이 참 전했으며, 이 중 3만 6천 명 이상이 전사 하고 10만 명 이상이 부상을 입었다. 이 들의 헌신은 미국 역사 속에서 종종 간 과되지만, 대한민국 국민들에게는 지금 도 깊이 존경받고 있다.

이번 오찬은 한국과 미국, 특히 알래스 카가 공유하는 역사적 유대감을 상기시 키는 계기가 되었으며, 행사 주최 측은 앞으로도 참전용사들에 대한 예우를 지 속하고, 평화와 민주주의를 위한 희생을 젊은 세대에게 교육하는 것이 중요하다 고 강조했다.

행사의 마지막에는 모든 참석자들이 단 체 사진을 촬영하며, 자유를 지키기 위 해 헌신한 영웅들에게 바치는 작지만 의 미 있는 헌사를 남겼다.

In honor of the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, a special luncheon reception was held at the Marriott Hotel in Anchorage on Thursday, July 25. The event was a moving tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Alaska’s Korean War veterans, drawing together veterans, their families, and community leaders in a heartfelt celebration of service and remembrance.

Hosted by the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Anchorage, the luncheon recognized the critical role played by service members during the Korean War (1950–1953), and especially those from Alaska. The Korean War Armistice Agreement, signed on July 27, 1953, marked the ceasefire that ended open hostilities on the Korean Peninsula. While a peace treaty was never signed, the armistice created the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and remains the foundation of the tense but lasting peace between South and North Korea. Speakers at the event included officials from the Korean Consulate, the city, the Korean American Community, and representatives from veterans’ organizations. They expressed deep gratitude to the veterans, noting that without their courage, South Korea would not be the thriving democracy it is today.

The event featured a musical performance by Sara Yoon, who performed a traditional Korean fan dance, followed by a lunch reception. Some were also invited to share stories of their time in service, bringing personal reflections to a war that is often referred to as “The Forgotten War.”

Approximately 1.8 million Americans served in the Korean War, with over 36,000 killed and more than 100,000 wounded. Their contributions, while sometimes overlooked in broader U.S. history, remain profoundly honored by the Korean people.

The luncheon served as a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between Korea and the United States, especially Alaska’s special place in that legacy. Organizers emphasized the importance of continuing to honor and support veterans and to educate younger generations about the sacrifices made for peace and democracy. As the event concluded, attendees stood together for a group photo— a fitting tribute to those who helped secure freedom for a nation half a world away.
