Korean School Students Showcase Their Skills… Two Alaska Representatives Advance to Bellevue Finals. The 2026 Youth Unification Golden Bell Quiz Competition was successfully held at the Anchorage Korean School in Alaska, becoming a meaningful educational event that helped raise awareness of Korean reunification and historical understanding among Korean American youth in the local community.

This competition served as the Anchorage regional preliminary round to select participants for the main finals hosted by the Seattle Council of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. The preliminary contest began at noon on April 11 at the Anchorage Korean School, followed by an awards ceremony on April 18 to recognize the students’ efforts and celebrate their achievements.

According to the results, the Gold Prize was awarded to Jayden Hyunseo Lee (9th grade), who demonstrated outstanding ability. The Silver Prize went to Kevin Lee (9th grade), the Bronze Prize to Amy Stockly (8th grade), and the Participation Award to Gary Stockly (6th grade). Prize money and certificates were presented as follows: $300 for Gold, $200 for Silver, $100 for Bronze, and $50 for Participation. All participants received warm applause for calmly solving the questions while displaying impressive knowledge of Korean history, culture, and reunification issues.

In particular, Gold Prize winner Jayden Hyunseo Lee and Silver Prize winner Kevin Lee will represent Alaska at the finals to be held on April 25 at Bellevue City Hall in Washington State. The two finalists also received generous support from the local community. Advisory member Hyunpa Yeo donated round-trip airfare for the students, while Seattle Council Chair Susan Lee pledged lodging assistance, adding a heartwarming spirit of encouragement. Their support has been praised as a beautiful example of the Korean community’s unity in nurturing the next generation.

Should either student win the finals, they will earn the opportunity to participate in the World Competition to be held in Korea as representatives of the Seattle Council. Regional champions from various areas will compete there for the final title.

Chairman SK Son of the Anchorage Chapter stated, “The Youth Unification Golden Bell Competition is more than a simple quiz contest. It is an educational platform that instills in future generations the history and identity of the Korean people, as well as the vision of peaceful reunification.” He added, “In the past, Anchorage representatives advanced twice to the World Competition as Seattle Council representatives, and we hope to see excellent results again this year.”

Secretary Yeonsoon Min of the Anchorage Chapter also commented, “We hope the Golden Bell event will become one of the most anticipated signature events for students of the Anchorage Korean School. Our community looks forward to seeing these young people grow into Korean leaders in the global era, and we wholeheartedly support the two finalists.” Meanwhile, the finals will be conducted in English, with all questions displayed simultaneously in both Korean and English on screen. Participants may write their answers in whichever language they are most comfortable with; however, incorrect spelling will be marked wrong, making accurate wording essential. In addition, rather than using an elimination-style survival format, the competition will proceed through all questions, with final rankings determined by total score.

2026년 청소년 통일 골든벨 퀴즈대회가 알래스카 앵커리지 한글학교에서 성황 리에 열려, 지역 한인 청소년들에게 통 일 의식과 역사 인식을 높이는 뜻깊은 교육 행사로 자리매김했다.

이번 대회는 민주평화통일자문회의 시 애틀협의회가 주최하는 본선 참가자 선 발을 위한 앵커리지 지역 예선으로, 지 난 4월 11일 정오 12시 앵커리지 한글 학교에서 예선전을 시작으로 막을 올 렸다. 이어 4월 18일에는 시상식이 열 려 참가 학생들의 노고를 격려하고 수 상의 기쁨을 함께 나누는 뜻깊은 시간 을 가졌다.

대회 결과, 금상은 뛰어난 실력을 발휘 한 이현서 군(9학년, Jayden Hyunseo Lee)이 차지했으며, 은상은 이도건 군(9 학년, Kevin Lee), 동상은 에이미 스톡클 리 양(8학년, Amy Stockly), 참가상은 게 리 스톡클리 군(6학년, Gary Stockly)에 게 돌아갔다. 수상 학생들에게는 각각 금상 300달러, 은상 200달러, 동상 100 달러, 참가상 50달러의 상금과 상장이 수여됐다. 참가 학생들은 침착하게 문 제를 풀며 한국 역사와 문화, 통일 관련 지식을 유감없이 발휘해 큰 박수를 받 았다.

특히 금상 수상자인 이현서 군과 은상 수상자인 이도건 군은 오는 4월 25일 워싱턴주 벨뷰 시청에서 열리는 결승전 에 알래스카 대표로 출전하게 된다. 결 승전에 참가하는 두 학생에게는 지역사 회의 따뜻한 후원도 이어졌다. 여현파 자문위원은 학생들의 왕복 항공권을 기 부했으며, 이수잔 시애틀협의회 위원장 은 숙박 지원을 약속해 훈훈한 감동을 더했다. 이는 차세대 청소년들의 성장과 도전을 응원하는 한인사회의 아름다운 연대 정신으로 평가받고 있다.

이번 본선에서 우승할 경우, 시애틀협의 회 대표 자격으로 한국에서 열리는 세계 대회에 참가할 수 있는 기회가 주어진 다. 세계대회에는 각 지역 대표들이 참 가해 최종 우승자를 가리게 된다.

손석근 민주평통 앵커리지협의회 회장 은 “청소년 통일 골든벨 대회는 단순 한 퀴즈 경연을 넘어 미래 세대에게 한 민족의 역사와 정체성, 평화통일의 비전 을 심어주는 교육의 장이라는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다”며 “과거에도 앵커리지 대표 학생들이 두 차례 시애틀협의회 대 표로 세계대회에 진출한 바 있어, 이번 대회에서도 우수한 성과를 거두기를 기 대한다”고 말했다.

민연순 앵커리지협의회 간사도 “골든 벨 행사가 이제 앵커리지 한글학교 학생 들이 가장 기다리는 대표 행사 가운데 하나로 자리 잡기를 바란다”며 “지역 사회는 이번 대회를 통해 자라나는 청소 년들이 글로벌 시대의 한인 리더로 성장 해 나가기를 기대하고 있으며, 결승전에 나서는 두 학생의 선전을 한마음으로 응 원하고 있다”고 전했다.

한편 본선대회는 영어로 진행되며, 모든 문제는 스크린을 통해 한국어와 영어로 동시에 제시된다. 참가자는 한국어 또는 영어 가운데 편한 언어로 답안을 작성 할 수 있으나, 철자가 틀릴 경우 오답 처 리되므로 정확한 단어 작성이 중요하다. 또한 탈락자가 발생하는 서바이벌 방식 이 아닌, 끝까지 모든 문제를 푼 뒤 총점 으로 순위를 가리는 다득점제로 진행될 예정이다.
