MONTERREY, Mexico — South Africa secured its first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout stage berth with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the final Group A match on Wednesday, June 24, at Monterrey Stadium.

The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko finished a cross from substitute Tshepang Moremi, scoring the only goal of the match. Moremi had entered the game just one minute earlier, giving South Africa an immediate attacking spark on the counterattack.

South Korea controlled much of the possession but struggled to create clear scoring chances against South Africa’s organized defensive shape. The result was a disappointing end to the group stage for South Korea, which opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Czechia before suffering consecutive 1-0 defeats to Mexico and South Africa. The loss left South Korea dependent on the final ranking of third-place teams under the expanded 48-team World Cup format.

South Africa advanced to face Canada in the Round of 32, marking the country’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.
