BELLEVUE, Wash. — Korean American students from across Washington State gathered at Bellevue City Hall on the 25th for the annual “Unification Golden Bell” competition, an event designed to promote awareness of Korean unification and deepen understanding of Korean history and current affairs on the Korean Peninsula.

Hosted by the Seattle Chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council (President Kyuho Hwang), the competition brought together youth from various schools and grade levels to test their knowledge and critical thinking skills in a spirited academic setting. Taking the top honor was Jason Kim, a 10th-grade student at Kennedy Catholic High School, who earned the grand prize and secured a ticket to compete in the finals in Korea. Kim stood out throughout the competition for his composure and consistency, maintaining focus through the final rounds and earning strong applause from judges and attendees.

The event was led by Hyeseong Yoon, Chair of the Unification Education Committee, and featured a rigorous series of questions that challenged participants’ knowledge of unification, history, and geopolitics. Students demonstrated not only academic ability but also a strong awareness of issues affecting the Korean Peninsula. Other top finishers included Yunsung Jang, a 7th-grade student at Whitman Middle School, who received the gold prize, and Woojin Shin, a 9th-grade student at Bellevue High School, who earned the silver prize.

Bronze prizes were awarded to Jooyoung Yoon (11th grade, Henry M. Jackson High School), Hyunseo Lee (Jayden Lee), a 9th-grade student at West Anchorage High School, and Ian Cho, a 7th-grade student at Tyee Middle School.

Also participating in the event was Kevin Lee of Alaska, an 8th grader at Mears Middle School, who showcased strong enthusiasm and dedication throughout the competition.

In his remarks, President Kyuho Hwang emphasized the broader impact of the competition. “Unification Golden Bell is more than just a knowledge contest—it is an important educational platform where the next generation of Korean American youth
can reflect on the future of the Korean Peninsula and develop a stronger sense of identity,” he said. “We hope to see even more students participate in the future and expand their understanding and interest in unification.” As the grand prize winner, Jason
Kim will go on to represent overseas Korean youth in the final competition to be held in Korea, where he will compete with top students from around the world.

벨뷰, 워싱턴주 – 지난 25일 벨뷰 시청에서 열린 ‘통일 골든벨’ 대회에는 워싱턴주 전역의 한인 청소년들이 한자리에 모여 한반도 통일에 대한 인식을 높이고 한국 역사 및 시사 문제에 대한이해를 겨루는 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다. 민주평화통일자문회의 시애틀협의회(회장 황규호)가 주최한 이번 대회는 다양한 학교와 학년의 학생들이 참가해 지식과 사고력을 겨루는 활기찬 학술 행사로진행됐다.

대상은 케네디 가톨릭 고등학교 10학년 제이슨 김 군이 차지했으며, 한국에서열리는 본선 대회 진출권을 획득했다. 제이슨 김 군은 대회 내내 침착함과 안정적인 실력을 유지하며 마지막까지 집중력을 잃지 않는 모습으로 심사위원과 관람객들의 큰 박수를 받았다.

이번 행사는 통일교육분과위원장 윤혜성의 주도로 진행되었으며, 통일, 역사, 그리고 한반도 정세를 아우르는 다양한문제들이 출제되어 참가 학생들의 지식과 이해도를 종합적으로 평가했다. 학생들은 학업적 역량뿐 아니라 한반도를 둘러싼 주요 이슈에 대한 높은 관심과 이해를 보여주었다.

금상은 휘트먼 중학교 7학년 장윤성 학생이 수상했으며, 은상은 벨뷰 고등학교 9학년 신우진 학생에게 돌아갔다.

동상은 헨리 M. 잭슨 고등학교 11학년 윤주영, 웨스트 앵커리지 고등학교 9학년 이현서(Jayden Lee), 타이 중학교 7학년 이안 조 학생이 각각 수상했다.

이번 행사에는 알래스카 출신으로 Mears Middle School에 재학 중인 8학년생 케빈 리(Kevin Lee)도 참가해 대회 전반에 걸쳐 높은 열정과 헌신적인 모습을 보여주었습니다.

황규호 회장은 “통일 골든벨은 단순한 지식 경연을 넘어 차세대 한인 청소년들이 한반도의 미래를 고민하고 정체성을확립하는 중요한 교육의 장”이라며 “앞으로 더 많은 학생들이 참여해 통일에 대한 관심과 이해를 넓히길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

대상을 수상한 제이슨 김 군은 향후 한국에서 열리는 본선 대회에 참가해 해외 한인 청소년 대표로서 전 세계 학생들과 실력을 겨루게 된다.
