ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska could see billions of dollars in new military construction and modernization in the coming years, with major projects planned for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base and other facilities.

The U.S. Air Force said nearly $11 billion in Alaska-related projects were included in the fiscal year 2027 budget request. The figure represents proposed spending, not money already received. Air Force officials have also said roughly $7 billion to $8 billion could be invested in Alaska over the next five years. 

One major project is a $404 million runway expansion at JBER designed to increase the base’s ability to support military aircraft.

The Senate Armed Services Committee’s version of the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act also includes about $2.6 billion in Alaska military construction and projects, according to Sen. Dan Sullivan’s office. These figures may overlap and should not be added together.

Anchorage could see major economic benefits from the buildup. Alaska Public Media reported that officials are preparing for roughly $7 billion in military-related investment over five years, along with the possible arrival of about 2,500 military families. 

The investment could create opportunities for Alaska contractors, engineers and suppliers while also increasing pressure on housing and public services.

Final funding will depend on congressional approval and appropriations.

미 공군은 2027 회계연도 예산안에 알래스카 관련 사업 약 110억 달러가 포함됐다고 밝혔다. 다만 이 금액은 이미 확보된 예산이 아니라 제안된 투자 규모다. 공군 관계자들은 향후 5년 동안 알래스카에 약 70억~80억 달러가 투자될 수 있다고 밝힌 바 있다.

주요 사업 가운데 하나는 JBER의 4억400만 달러 규모 활주로 확장 공사다. 이 사업은 다양한 군용 항공기를 수용하고 기지의 작전 능력을 강화하기 위해 추진되고 있다.

댄 설리번 연방 상원의원실에 따르면, 미 상원 군사위원회가 마련한 2027 회계연도 국방수권법안에도 알래스카 군사시설 건설 및 관련 사업에 약 26억 달러가 포함돼 있다. 다만 이 금액들은 일부 사업이 중복될 수 있기 때문에 단순히 합산해서는 안 된다.

이번 군사 투자 확대는 앵커리지 경제에도 상당한 영향을 미칠 것으로 전망된다. Alaska Public Media에 따르면 지역 당국은 향후 5년 동안 약 70억 달러 규모의 군사 관련 투자가 진행될 가능성에 대비하고 있으며, 약 2,500가구의 군인 가족이 새롭게 유입될 가능성도 예상하고 있다.

대규모 군사 투자는 알래스카의 건설업체, 엔지니어링 회사, 하청업체, 자재 공급업체 등에 새로운 사업 기회를 제공할 것으로 기대된다. 반면 주택 수요 증가와 공공서비스 부담 확대 등 지역사회가 해결해야 할 과제도 함께 커질 수 있다.

최종 투자 규모와 사업 일정은 앞으로 연방 의회의 예산 승인과 실제 예산 배정 결과에 따라 결정될 예정이다.
