On the last Monday of May, the United States observes not simply a holiday, but a solemn day of remembrance. Memorial Day is a day dedicated to honoring the fallen men and women who gave their lives for freedom and peace. It is a time to remember their sacrifice and bow our heads in gratitude for their courage and devotion.

For Koreans, especially, Memorial Day carries profound meaning. The Korean War, which broke out on June 25, 1950, plunged the Korean Peninsula into devastation and sorrow. Under the invasion of communism, South Korea faced a desperate crisis that threatened its very existence. At that moment, America sent countless young men to a distant and unfamiliar land in the Far East. To protect the freedom of a country they had never known, many young Americans sacrificed their youth upon the cold battlefields of Korea. During the Korean War, more than 1.8 million American service members participated in the conflict, and over 36,000 lost their lives. Countless others were wounded, and many never returned home to their families. Their sacrifice was not merely a military intervention to assist another nation. It was a noble stand to defend freedom and human dignity.

The Republic of Korea’s rise into a thriving democracy and global economic power was built, in part, upon the blood and sacrifice of these unnamed American heroes. The lights of Seoul, the laughter of children, and the freedom we enjoy to speak, learn, and live today quietly carry the legacy of their devotion.

Yet as time passes, the Korean War is often called “The Forgotten War.” But freedom must never forget the sacrifices upon which it was built. On this Memorial Day, we must remember once again that today’s South Korea exists because young American souls gave their lives for a nation they had never even known.

From the cold, snowy lands of Alaska to the green mountains of Korea, the value of freedom remains the same. The war may have ended, but gratitude never ends. Today, we offer our heartfelt thanks to the names of those veterans who became stars in the sky.

“Because of your sacrifice, we are free today.”

We extend our deepest respect and gratitude to all American veterans who fought and died for the Republic of Korea. Their courage and sacrifice will forever be remembered.

5월의 마지막 월요일, 미국은 단순한 휴일이 아닌 깊은 추모의 날을 맞이한 다. 바로 미국의 전사장병들을 기리는 Memorial Day 이다. 이 날은 전쟁터에서 자유와 평화를 위해 목숨을 바친 이들의 희생을 기억하며, 그들의 용기와 헌신 앞에 고개 숙이는 날이다.

특히 한국인들에게 Memorial Day는 더 욱 특별한 의미를 가진다. 1950년 6월 25일 발발한 Korean War 은 한반도를 폐허와 눈물 속에 몰아넣었다. 공산주의 의 침략 속에서 대한민국은 존립 자체가 위협받는 절체절명의 위기에 놓였다. 그 때 미국은 수많은 젊은이들을 머나먼 동 방의 작은 나라로 보냈다. 이름도 낯설 었던 한국의 자유를 지키기 위해, 수많 은 미국의 청년들이 차가운 전장 위에서 자신의 젊음을 바쳤다.

한국전쟁 기간 동안 약 180만 명 이상 의 미국 군인이 참전했으며, 그중 3만 6 천 명이 넘는 미군이 전사했다. 수많은 이들이 부상을 입었고, 가족의 품으로 돌아오지 못했다. 그들의 희생은 단순히 한 나라를 돕기 위한 군사적 개입이 아 니었다. 그것은 자유와 인간 존엄을 지 키기 위한 숭고한 선택이었다.

그러나 세월이 흐르며 한국전쟁은 종종 “잊혀진 전쟁(The Forgotten War)”이 라 불린다. 하지만 자유는 결코 잊혀져 서는 안 되는 희생 위에 세워진다. 우리 는 Memorial Day를 맞아 다시 한번 기억 해야 한다. 알지도 못했던 나라를 위해 목숨을 바친 미국의 젊은 영혼들이 있었 기에 오늘의 대한민국이 존재한다는 사 실을 말이다.

알래스카의 차가운 설원에서도, 한국의 푸른 산하에서도 자유의 가치는 같다. 전쟁은 끝났지만 감사는 끝나지 않았다. 우리는 오늘, 별이 된 참전용사들의 이 름 앞에 조용히 감사의 마음을 올린다. “당신들의 희생이 있었기에 오늘 우리 의 자유가 있습니다.”

대한민국을 위해 싸우다 목숨을 바친 모 든 미국 참전용사들에게 깊은 경의와 감 사를 드린다. 그들의 용기와 희생은 영 원히 기억될 것이다.
