A Personal Journey Through Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness by Boat

Alaska is home to another world that cannot be reached by car alone. After driving about one hour and ten minutes south from Anchorage to Whittier and passing through the gateway to Prince William Sound, a vast marine wilderness unfolds—offering a sense of freedom and tranquility that cannot be experienced on land.

The journey to Whittier requires passing through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. Traffic from Anchorage to Whittier begins with the first opening at 6:30 a.m. and is available at 30-minute intervals throughout the day, with the final passage at 10:30 p.m. Traffic from Whittier to Anchorage begins at 7:00 a.m. and operates hourly, with the last passage at 11:00 p.m. The ad-
venture truly begins the moment you emerge from the tunnel and come face to face with the sea.

The greatest attraction of Prince William Sound is the overwhelming sense of freedom that comes from being surrounded by endless open water. Countless islands scattered across the horizon create a scene that resembles a watercolor painting. Along the way, sea otters drift peacefully on the surface, dolphins race alongside the boat, and whales occasionally emerge from the depths to greet passing travelers. Numerous seabirds and migratory birds add to the experience, offering a warm welcome from Alaska’s rich natural world.

Another highlight of the Sound is its abundance of fresh seafood. The ocean itself seems like a giant natural refrigerator, filled with an endless variety of treasures. Cod, salmon, halibut, rockfish, yelloweye, lingcod, squid, and many other species inhabit these waters. For anglers, depths between 250 and 300 feet are often considered ideal fishing grounds. There is something uniquely satisfying about catching fish from the sea and enjoying them fresh aboard the boat—a reward that only a marine adventure can provide.

The vessel I travel on is not built for speed. It is a fiberglass trawler, designed for comfort and stability rather than fast travel. While it moves at a leisurely pace, it offers a peaceful and relaxing experience. With enough room for eight people to dine and sleep comfortably, it is perfectly suited for family trips or extended journeys with friends. Sharing meals together, watching the scenery drift by, and falling asleep to the gentle rhythm of the waves create memories that few hotels or campgrounds can match.

Personally, I have always loved the ocean. Throughout my years in America, I have chosen to live only in places connected to the sea. Mountains certainly have their own grandeur and beauty, but the ocean offers something different—abundant food, open space, and a slower, more relaxed way of life. Yet the sea is not for everyone. Some people feel uneasy on the water. Even while surrounded by a vast and open horizon, they may feel confined, as though they are trapped aboard the boat. For some, simply being on the water creates a sense of pressure rather than freedom.

The final day of every voyage is often accompanied by a feeling of sadness. There is always a sense of reluctance as the boat turns toward shore and the realities of daily life begin to return. Yet there is also a deep feeling of satisfaction. The sea has once again provided generously. Coolers are filled with fresh fish, and hearts are filled with memories that will last long after the trip is over.

Prince William Sound is far more than a fishing destination. It is a place where people and nature coexist in harmony, where one can find rest, renewal, and perspective. Every time I complete a voyage, I am reminded of the same truth: the ocean has given freely and abundantly. With gratitude for its generosity, I return to shore carrying both its gifts and its memories—already looking forward to the next journey upon the water.

알래스카에서 배를 타고 떠나는 특별한 해양 여행 체험기

알래스카에는 자동차로는 닿을 수 없는 또 하나의 세상이 있다. 앵커리지에서 남쪽으로 약 1시간 10분을 달려 위디어(Whittier)에 도착한 뒤, 프린스 윌리엄 사운드(Prince William Sound)의 광활한 바다로 나서면 육지에서는 경험할 수 없는 자유와 여유가 펼쳐진다.

위디어로 향하는 길은 안톤 앤더슨 메모리얼 터널(Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel)을 통과해야 한다. 앵커리지에서
위디어 방향은 오전 6시 30분 첫 개통을 시작으로 30분 간격으로 통행이 가능하며, 마지막 통행은 저녁 10시 30분이다. 위디어에서 앵커리지 방향은 오전 7시 첫 개통 후 매시간 운행되며 오후 11시가 마지막 통행 시간이다. 터널을 지나 바다를 마주하는 순간부터 여행은 시작된다.

프린스 윌리엄 사운드의 가장 큰 매력은 끝없이 펼쳐진 바다 위에서 느끼는 해방감이다. 수많은 섬들이 점점이 떠 있는 풍경은 마치 한 폭의 수채화 같다. 항해 중에는 해달이 물 위를 유유히 떠다니고, 돌고래가 배를 따라 헤엄치며, 때로는 고래가 수면 위로 모습을 드러내기도 한다. 다양한 철새들 역시 방문객을 반기며 자연이 선사하는 특별한 환대를 경험하게 한다.

이곳의 또 다른 즐거움은 풍성한 해산물이다. 마치 거대한 바다가 냉장고 역할을 하는 듯, 신선한 먹거리가 넘쳐난다. 대구, 연어, 할리벗, 락피쉬, 옐로아이, 링카드, 오징어 등 다양한 어종을 만날 수 있으며, 일반적으로 수심 250~300피트 구간이 낚시에 적합한 포인트로 알려져 있다. 직접 잡은 생선을 즉석에서 맛보는 즐거움은 바다 여행만이 줄 수 있는 특별한 선물이다.

필자가 이용하는 배는 속도를 즐기는 스포츠 보트가 아니다. 파이버글라스로 제작된 트롤러(Trawler)형 보트로, 빠르지는 않지만 편안함과 안정감을 제공한다. 최대 8명이 함께 식사하고 잠을 잘 수 있는 넓은 실내 공간을 갖추고 있어 가족이나 친구들과 며칠씩 바다 위에서 생활하며 여행을 즐기기에 적합하다. 배 안에서 함께 식사를 나누고, 밤에는 잔잔한 파도 소리를 들으며 잠드는 경험은 호텔이나 캠핑에서는 쉽게 누릴 수 없는 특별한 추억이 된다.

개인적으로 필자는 오래전부터 바다를 사랑해 왔다. 미국 생활 역시 대부분 바다와 접한 지역에서 보냈다. 물론 산이 주는 웅장함과 아름다움도 좋지만, 풍부한 먹거리와 넉넉한 여유를 품은 바다가 더 큰 매력으로 다가온다. 다만 모든 사람이 바다를 좋아하는 것은 아니다. 어떤 이들은 넓은 바다 한가운데 나와서도 오히려 배 안에 갇혀 있는 듯한 답답함을 느끼기도 한다. 물 위에 있다는 사실 자체가 부담으로 다가오는 사람들도 적지 않다.

여행의 마지막 날이 되면 늘 아쉬움이 남는다. 육지로 돌아가 다시 일상 속으로 들어가야 한다는 생각에 묘한 불안감마저 스쳐 지나간다. 그러나 한편으로는 바다가 허락한 풍성한 선물들을 가득 싣고 돌아오는 뿌듯함도 함께 느낀다. 쿨러에는 신선한 생선이 가득하고, 마음속에는 바다의 추억이 차곡차곡 쌓여 있다.프린스 윌리엄 사운드는 단순한 낚시터가 아니다. 자연과 사람이 함께 호흡하며 쉼을 얻는 공간이다. 매번 항해를 마칠 때마다 느끼는 것은 같다. 넓고 깊은 바다는 언제나 아낌없이 베풀어 주었고, 그 넉넉한 아량에 감사하는 마음으로 다시 육지를 향한다. 그리고 또다시 다음 항해를 꿈꾸게 된다.
