The 2026 Alaska gubernatorial election is shaping up to be one of the most competitive statewide races in recent Alaska history as candidates from across the political spectrum prepare to compete for the state’s highest office. The election comes as current Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy reaches the end of his second term and is unable to seek reelection due to Alaska’s constitutional term limits. With no incumbent in the race, several high-profile Republicans, Democrats, and independent candidates have already launched campaigns months ahead of the August 2026 primary election. Alaska voters will once again use the state’s nonpartisan top-four primary system combined with ranked-choice voting in the general election. Under the system approved by voters in 2020, all candidates appear together on the same primary ballot regardless of party affiliation. The top four candidates then advance to the general election, where voters rank candidates in order of preference.

The Republican field currently includes several well-known political figures from around the state. Former Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson has entered the race, alongside Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, former Alaska Revenue Commissioner Adam Crum, former state senator Click Bishop, former Attorney General Treg Taylor, former Senate Majority Leader Shelley Hughes, and Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries.

On the Democratic side, former Alaska Senate Minority Leader Tom Begich, state senator Matt Claman, and former state representative Jonathan Kreiss Tomkins have announced campaigns focused on issues including education funding, public safety, affordable housing, and economic diversification. Independent candidates have also entered the race, reflecting Alaska’s history of strong nonpartisan and independent political movements. Some political observers believe Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system could give moderate or independent candidates a stronger opportunity to compete statewide.

The 2026 governor’s race is expected to center heavily around Alaska’s economy and long-term fiscal future. Major campaign topics already emerging include the Permanent Fund Dividend, energy development, declining oil revenues, housing shortages, inflation, public education funding, transportation infrastructure, and crime prevention.

The Permanent Fund Dividend remains one of the most debated political issues in Alaska. Candidates are expected to present differing visions on how large future PFD payments should be and how the state should balance dividends with government spending and budget stability.

Energy policy is also likely to become a major campaign issue. Republican candidates have largely emphasized expanding resource development, including oil, natural gas, and mining projects, while Democratic candidates have generally highlighted renewable energy investment and economic diversification efforts.

Fundraising and statewide outreach efforts are already underway as candidates travel throughout Alaska to meet voters. Because Alaska’s population is spread across both urban centers and remote rural communities, gubernatorial candidates often spend significant time campaigning in Anchorage, Fairbanks, the Mat-Su Valley, Southeast Alaska, and rural villages across the state.

Political analysts expect the race to remain fluid over the coming months, with additional candidates potentially entering before filing deadlines approach. The ranked-choice voting system may also encourage coalition-building and broader appeal beyond traditional party bases.

2026년 알래스카 주지사 선거가 본격적 으로 시작되면서, 이번 선거는 최근 알 래스카 역사상 가장 치열한 주 전체 선 거 중 하나가 될 것으로 전망되고 있다.

다양한 정치 성향을 가진 후보들이 알래 스카 최고 행정 책임자 자리를 놓고 경 쟁에 나설 준비를 하고 있다.

현재 공화당 소속인 마이크 던리비(Mike Dunleavy) 주지사는 두 번째 임기를 마 치게 되며, 알래스카 헌법상 임기 제한 으로 인해 재선에 출마할 수 없다. 현 직 주지사가 없는 상황에서 여러 공화 당, 민주당, 무소속 후보들이 이미 2026 년 8월 예비선거를 앞두고 선거 운동을 시작했다.
