2025년 6월 20일, 알래스카 전역의 주민들은 북반구에서 가장 긴 낮과 가장 짧은 밤을 의미하는 하지(summer solstice)를 기념하며 특별한 하루를 보냈 습니다. 해가 늦게 지고 밤에도 거의 해가 지지 않는 알래스카의 하지 기간은 이제 알래스카를 대표하는 문화 축제로
자리 잡고 있습니다.

하지란 무엇인가요?
하지는 지구의 축이 태양 쪽으로 가장 기울어진 시점으로, 북극권 위 지역에서는 하루 종일 해가 지지 않는 ‘백야’를 경험할 수 있습니다. 2025년 하지는미 동부 기준 6월 20일 오후 10시 42분에 공식적으로 시작되었습니다. ‘Solstice(하지)’는 라틴어로 ‘태양이 멈춘다’는 뜻으로, 태양이 하늘에서 가장 높은 위치에 머무는 것을 의미합니다.

알래스카의 앵커리지와 페어뱅크스 같은 도시에서는 이 시기에 해가 수평선 아래로 거의 내려가지 않아, 주민들은이 특별한 자연 현상을 만끽합니다. 앵커리지 다운타운 하지 축제 앵커리지 시내 4번가에서는 낮 12시부터 오후 5시까지 열리는 하지 축제에 수천 명의 주민과 관광객이 몰렸습니다. 거리에는 라이브 음악, 푸드 트럭, 지역 상점, 롤러 더비 시연, 동물 체험 농장, 무용 공연, 3대3 농구 대회 등 다양한 행사가 가득했습니다. ABBAlaska 라이브 공연
앵커리지 코리안 뉴스는 Humpy’s Alehouse 현장을 직접 방문했습니다. 이곳 에서는 70년대 아바(ABBA) 커버 밴드인 ABBAlaska가 신나는 공연을 펼치며, 관객들은 음식을 즐기고 음료를 마시며 낮 동안 야외 라이브 밴드 공연을 즐겼
습니다. 한밤중 플랫탑 산행 많은 모험가들은 앵커리지에서 가장 많이 등반되는 산인 플랫탑 마운틴(Flattop Mountain)을 찾아 연례 하지 산행에 참여했습니다. 수백 명이 정상에 올라 백 야의 절정을 경험하며, 정상에서는 춤과 요가, 절벽 점프 등 다양한 활동으로 하지를 축하했습니다. 붉게 물든 하늘은 결코 어두워지지 않았습니다. 힐탑 산악자전거 및 펌프 트랙 축제 앵커리지의 힐탑 스키장(Hilltop Ski Area)은 하지를 맞아 산악자전거 축제의 장으로 변신했습니다. 펌프 트랙 챌린지, 라이브 DJ 공연, 자전거 리프트를 통한 트레일 라이딩 등이 자정까지 이어졌으며, 실력에 상관없이 모든 라이더들이 무한 한 백야 속을 질주하며 하지를 즐겼습니다. 페어뱅크스의 미드나잇 선 야구 경기 한편 페어뱅크스에서는 그로우든 메 모리얼 파크(Growden Memorial Park).

에서 전통의 미드나잇 선 야구 경기가 열렸습니다. 1906년부터 이어져 온 이경기는 인공 조명 없이 진행되며, 올해도 오후 10시 30분에 시작해 백야 하늘 아래서 진행되었습니다. 주민들과 관광 객 모두가 알래스카만의 특별한 일몰 없는 밤을 함께했습니다.

해안 및 소도시 축제 모스 패스(Moose Pass)에서는 가족 친화적인 장터와 음악 공연이 열렸고, 셀
도비아(Seldovia)에서는 카체막 만 (Kachemak Bay)을 배경으로 주민들이 모여 음식과 게임, 공연을 즐기며 지
역 공동체의 유대를 다졌습니다. 전 세계적이고 역사적인 의미 알래스카에서는 축제의 날이지만, 하지는 전 세계적으로도 깊은 역사적 의미를지닙니다. 고대 문명은 스톤헨지(Stonehenge), 치첸이트사(Chichen Itza)와 같은 유적을 하지를 기준으로 설계했습니다. 또한 6월 21일은 세계 요가의 날 (International Day of Yoga)로 지정되어있어 태양의 영적 중요성 또한 강조되고있습니다.

Alaska Celebrates Summer Solstice 2025 with Sunshine, Festivals, and Midnight Fun On June 20, 2025, Alaskans across the state gathered to celebrate the summer solstice—an astronomical event marking the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Known for its stunningly late sunsets and nearly endless daylight, the solstice has become a major cultural celebration in the Last Frontier.

What is the Summer Solstice?
The summer solstice occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is most inclined toward the sun, giving regions above the Arctic Circle 24 hours of daylight. In 2025, the solstice officially occurred at 10:42 p.m. EDT on June 20. Derived from Latin, the word “solstice” means “sun stands still,” reflecting the sun’s position at its highest point in the sky. For Alaska, particularly in cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks, this means a
night where the sun barely dips below the horizon—and people make the most of it.

Anchorage Downtown Summer Solstice Festival
In downtown Anchorage, the Summer Solstice Festival brought thousands of residents and visitors to 4th Avenue for one of the city’s most beloved events. Running from noon to 5 p.m., the street was filled with live music, food trucks, local vendors, roller derby demos, a petting zoo, dance performances, and
even a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. ABBAlaska Live Band Performance Anchorage Korean News was on-site at Humpy’s Alehouse where a 70’s Abba Cover band which goes by ABBAlaska performed a stellar performance as people enjoyed food and drinks, under the sun with live band
music.

Hiking Flattop at Midnight
Many adventurers took to Flattop Mountain, Anchorage’s most climbed peak, for the annual solstice hike.
Hundreds hiked up to the summit for panoramic views and to experience the midnight sun at its peak. Campers and hikers celebrated with spontaneous dance circles, yoga sessions, and solstice jumps off small ridges, silhouetted against a fiery sky that never went dark.

Hilltop Mountain Biking & Pump Track Fest
Hilltop Ski Area in Anchorage turned into a haven for mountain bikers with its Solstice Bike Festival. Featuring pump track challenges, music from live DJs, and lift-accessed trails open until midnight, the event drew riders of all skill levels looking to celebrate the endless daylight on two wheels.

Midnight Sun Baseball Game in Fairbanks
Meanwhile in Fairbanks, baseball fans packed Growden Memorial Park for the annual Midnight Sun Game, a tradition since 1906. Played without artificial lights, the game started at 10:30p.m. and went deep into the “night” under the natural glow of the solstice sky. Locals and tourists alike came out
for the once-a-year event that captures Alaska’s unique relationship with sunlight.

Coastal & Small Town Festivities
Smaller communities also joined the celebrations. Moose Pass hosted its family-friendly fair with crafts and music, while Seldovia brought locals together for food, games, and performances overlooking Kachemak Bay. These tight-knit gatherings empha- sized the strong community bonds found in Alaska’s coastal towns.

A Day of Global and Historical Significance
Though it’s a party in Alaska, the summer solstice has deep roots around the world. Ancient cultures built monuments like Stonehenge and Chichen Itza to mark the occasion. June 21 also serves as International Day of Yoga, a nod to the sun’s importance in many spiritual traditions.
