ANCHORAGE, Alaska (May 2, 2026) — The Anchorage Korean Language School held a “Market Day” event on May 2, 2026, in its auditorium, with 70 students and 11 teachers participating. The event was designed so that teachers operated booths as shop owners, offering items the school had prepared over the course of a year, while students used play money they had saved to make purchases.

The event was structured around a reward system in which students received 1,000 won for weekly attendance, along with additional earnings from homework and games. Over the course of the year, students saved this money and used it to purchase items displayed in the auditorium. Prices ranged from 1,000 to 20,000 won, and the selection included toys, household goods, and snacks prepared by teachers, with some items even imported directly from Korea.

Popular items included K-pop character dolls, keychains, animated ear hats, toy sets, ramen, headbands, and pens. On this day, even snacks had to be purchased using the students’ own savings. Some students who had low attendance found themselves without enough money to buy anything, while others who focused on buying goods ran out of money for snacks and went without
food. These moments highlighted the importance of budgeting and thoughtful spending.

The event provided students with a hands-on opportunity to learn about Korean currency and basic math skills, while also teaching them how to plan a budget and make purchasing decisions. It also served as a motivating factor for regular attendance and active participation in school activities.

Organizers noted that while rising costs increased the expense of preparing the event, generous sponsorships and donations allowed it to be carried out successfully. Principal Han Mi-young explained, “We designed this event so that teachers act as shop owners and students as customers, allowing them to develop practical economic awareness and a sense of responsibility.” She also expressed hope for continued community interest and support to sustain similar events in the future.

로 진행됐다.

행사는 매주 출석 학생에게 지급되는 1,000원과 숙제·게임등으로 얻은 금액을 일년 동안 모아 강당에 진열된 물
품을 구매하도록 구성됐다. 판매 가격은 천원에서 2만원까지 다양했고, 교사들이 틈틈이 준비한 장난감·생활용품·
간식류가 풍성하게 마련되었으며 일부 물품은 한국에서 직접 구입해 들여온 것
도 포함됐다.

물품에는 케이팝 캐릭터 인형,키체인, 귀가 움직이는 인형모자·장난감 세트, 라면, 머리띠, 볼펜 등 인기 상품들이 포함됐다. 이날은 간식도 학생들이 각자 돈으로 구입해 먹어야 했다, 출석이 적어 돈이 부족한 학생은 살 물건이 없었고 구매에 몰두한 일부 학생은 간식 을 살 여유가 없어 굶는 경우도 있어 계획적인 소비의 중요성을 체감하는 장면
이 연출됐다.

이번 행사는 학생들에게 한국 화폐와 계산법을 익히고 예산을 세워 물건을 선택·구매하는 경험을 제공해 한글학교
출석과 학습 참여 동기를 높이는 계기가됐다. 주최 측은 물가 상승으로 준비 비용이 증가했으나 많은 후원과 기부로 풍성하게 진행할 수 있었다고 전했다. 한미영 한글학교 교장은 “교사들이 가게 주인이 되고 학생들은 손님 역할을 하면서 실생활 경제 감각과 책임감을 배울 수 있도록 기획했다”고 말했다. 또한 이런 행사가 꾸준히 진행될 수있도록 많은 관심과 후원을 바란다고 말했다.
