Korean Americans meet candidates and community leaders during gathering at Valley of the Moon Park

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Members of Anchorage’s Korean American community gathered at Valley of the Moon Park on Friday, July 31, for a NEXGEN Civic Engagement Social focused on encouraging greater community participation ahead of Alaska’s 2026 elections.

Held on a warm, sunny summer evening, the event brought together Korean community members of different generations, including many members of the Korean Senior Association. Attendees shared food, conversation and an opportunity to meet several individuals involved in this year’s statewide election.

NEXGEN, a group representing youth and young adults within Anchorage’s Korean American community, has taken an increasingly active role in civic engagement efforts this year. Organizers are working to encourage Korean Americans to become more familiar with candidates, participate in elections and make their voices heard on issues affecting their families and communities.

The gathering gave attendees an opportunity to meet candidates in a relaxed community setting rather than through a traditional campaign event.

Among those attending was Tom Begich, who is running for governor in the 2026 election. Begich was joined at the event by former U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, who represented Alaska in the U.S. Senate from 2009 to 2015.

Bob Craig, who is running for lieutenant governor alongside Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Crum, also attended with his wife.

The gathering comes as Alaska prepares for its Aug. 18 primary election. Seventeen governor and lieutenant governor tickets are competing in the statewide primary, with the top four advancing to the Nov. 3 general election.

With major statewide races on the ballot this year, NEXGEN plans to continue emphasizing voter participation and civic education as Election Day approaches.

밸리 오브 더 문 파크에서 한인 주민들, 후보자 및 지역사회 인사들과 교류

앵커리지 — 앵커리지 한인사회 구성원들이 7월 31일 금요일 밸리 오브 더 문 파크에 모여, 2026년 알래스카 선거를 앞두고 지역사회의 시민참여를 독려하기 위한 NEXGEN 시민참여 소셜 행사에 참석했다.

따뜻하고 화창한 여름 저녁에 열린 이번 행사에는 다양한 세대의 한인 주민들이 참석했으며, 특히 한인 시니어협회 회원들도 다수 함께했다. 참석자들은 음식을 나누고 대화를 이어가며 올해 주 전체 선거에 출마한 인사들을 직접 만나는 시간을 가졌다.

NEXGEN은 앵커리지 한인사회의 청소년과 청년층을 대표하는 단체로, 올해 한인사회의 시민참여 활동에서 점차 적극적인 역할을 맡고 있다. 주최 측은 한인 유권자들이 후보자들을 더 잘 이해하고 선거에 참여하며, 가족과 지역사회에 영향을 미치는 주요 사안에 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 있도록 돕는 데 중점을 두고 있다.

이번 모임은 전통적인 선거 유세 행사와 달리 편안한 지역사회 분위기 속에서 주민들이 후보자들과 직접 만나 대화할 수 있는 기회를 제공했다.

참석자 가운데에는 2026년 알래스카 주지사 선거에 출마한 톰 베기치(Tom Begich)가 있었다. 베기치는 2009년부터 2015년까지 알래스카를 대표해 연방 상원의원을 지낸 마크 베기치(Mark Begich) 전 상원의원과 함께 행사에 참석했다.

공화당 주지사 후보 애덤 크럼(Adam Crum)과 함께 부지사 후보로 출마한 밥 크레이그(Bob Craig)도 부인과 함께 행사장을 찾았다.

이번 행사는 알래스카가 8월 18일 예비선거를 준비하는 가운데 열렸다. 올해 주지사·부지사 선거에는 17개 후보 조가 경쟁하고 있으며, 상위 4개 후보 조가 11월 3일 본선거에 진출하게 된다.

올해 알래스카에서 여러 주요 선거가 치러지는 만큼 NEXGEN은 선거일까지 한인사회의 투표 참여와 시민교육을 지속적으로 강조할 계획이다.
