ANCHORAGE, Alaska — For many Korean Americans who grew up in Alaska, memories of large youth gatherings remain a defining part of their childhood. Friday night soccer games, church youth events, retreats, and community activities regularly brought together young people from Korean churches across Anchorage, creating lasting friendships and a strong sense of community.

Today, however, those gatherings have become far less common.

Recognizing this shift, Pastor Harry Kim has launched an initiative to better understand why fewer Korean American youth and young adults are participating in community and church activities—and, more importantly, how to create programs that better meet the needs of today’s generation.

Rather than making assumptions, Pastor Kim is beginning by listening.

He is asking Korean American youth and young adults to share their experiences, interests, and ideas through a community survey. The feedback will help identify the challenges facing the younger generation and guide future programs designed to strengthen relationships, foster belonging, and create meaningful opportunities for connection.

“Before we can build programs that matter, we need to understand what young people are looking for,” Pastor Kim said. “Their voices are essential in shaping the future of our community.”

Community members between the ages of 15 and 35 are encouraged to participate by scanning the QR code included with this article and completing the short survey. Whether someone is actively involved in church or community organizations—or has drifted away—their feedback is equally valuable.

The survey marks the first step in what Pastor Kim hopes will become a renewed effort to reconnect Korean American youth and young adults throughout Alaska. By listening first and building programs around the needs and interests of the next generation, organizers hope to create opportunities that inspire greater participation and strengthen the Korean American community for years to come.

앵커리지 – 알래스카에서 성장한 많은 한인들에게는 한인 청소년들이 함께 모였던 활기찬 모임들이 아직도 소중한 추억으로 남아 있다. 금요일 저녁 축구 모임을 비롯해 교회 청소년 예배와 수련회, 다양한 커뮤니티 행사에는 앵커리지 곳곳의 한인 교회 청소년들이 함께 모여 우정을 쌓고 공동체 의식을 키워왔다.

그러나 최근에는 이러한 모임이 예전보다 크게 줄어든 것이 현실이다.

이러한 변화를 주목한 구세군(The Salvation Army) 해리 김(Harry Kim) 목사는 한인 청소년과 청년들이 교회와 지역사회 활동에 참여하는 비율이 감소한 이유를 이해하고, 오늘날 젊은 세대의 필요에 맞는 프로그램을 개발하기 위한 프로젝트를 시작했다.

해리 김 목사는 먼저 답을 찾기보다 젊은 세대의 목소리를 직접 듣는 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각하고 있다.

이를 위해 한인 청소년과 청년들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시해 그들의 경험과 관심사, 아이디어를 수집하고 있다. 이번 설문을 통해 젊은 세대가 겪고 있는 어려움을 파악하고, 공동체 소속감을 높이며 서로 연결될 수 있는 새로운 프로그램을 마련하는 데 필요한 기초 자료를 얻을 계획이다.

해리 김 목사는 “의미 있는 프로그램을 만들기 위해서는 먼저 젊은 세대가 무엇을 원하는지 이해해야 한다”며 “그들의 목소리가 우리 한인사회의 미래를 만들어가는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 한다”고 말했다.

이번 설문조사는 15세부터 35세까지의 한인 청소년과 청년을 대상으로 진행된다. 현재 교회나 한인단체 활동에 적극적으로 참여하고 있는 사람뿐만 아니라, 최근 활동이 뜸했던 사람들의 의견도 모두 소중한 자료가 될 예정이다.

해리 김 목사는 이번 설문조사가 알래스카 한인 청소년과 청년들을 다시 연결하기 위한 첫걸음이 되기를 기대하고 있다. 젊은 세대의 의견을 바탕으로 그들의 관심과 필요를 반영한 프로그램을 마련함으로써, 앞으로 더욱 많은 청소년과 청년들이 한인사회와 교회 공동체에 참여할 수 있는 계기를 만들고자 한다.
