Yon Su Kim (金燕洙), 22nd President of the Korean Association: A Living History of the Korean Community in Alaska
Born on March 15, 1948, in Sindu-ri, Wonbuk-myeon, Taean County, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, Yon Su Kim (金燕洙), the 22nd President of the Korean Association, was raised as the son of a humble farmer. Yet his life would become anything but ordinary. For nearly half a century, he has devoted himself to serving the Koreancommunity in Anchorage, Alaska, earning
the respect and admiration of countless people as one of its most dedicated community leaders. Whenever Mr. Kim
reflects on his childhood, he begins by talking about his father.

“Whenever it rained, my father would help our neighbors protect their crops before taking care of our own. By the time he returned, our grain had often been soaked by the rain. As a child, I didn’t understand him. I even resented him at times. But as the years passed, I realized that I had become just like him.” He smiled gently as he recalled those memories. Behind that smile lay deep gratitude and respect for a father who had taught him, through his actions, the true meaning of generosity and selfless
service.

In 1974, He married Young Hee Kim (formerly Young Hee Song), his lifelong companion. Encouraged by his wife’s
older sister, who was living in Pennsylvania and often spoke of the loneliness experienced by Korean immigrants in
those days, the young couple decided to immigrate to America. Traveling through Japan, they unexpectedly found themselves
settling in Anchorage, Alaska. At that time, immigration procedures made it possible for them to establish permanent
residency there, and what seemed like an unexpected destination became the place where they would build their lives. That decision would eventually become a meaningful chapter not only in their family’s history but also in the history of the Korean community in Alaska.

Life in a new country was far from easy, but diligence and perseverance opened doors. While studying English, Mr. Kim was introduced by one of his teachers to a position in building management with MarkAir. Through years of faithful work, he built both a stable career and a loving family. Together with his wife, he raised three sons—James, Ethan, and
Joseph—who all grew into responsible members of society. Today, the couple enjoys life as proud grandparents to two
granddaughters and two grandsons. One memorable story beautifully illustrates the impact of Mr. Kim’s life. While Ethan was temporarily working at a Costco store in Seattle, a Korean customer asked whether he was Korean. After Ethan replied yes and mentioned that he was from Anchorage, the man immediately asked, “Do you happen to
know Yon Su Kim?” When Ethan answered, “He’s my father,” the man was astonished and replied, “He is one of the people I admire most.” When Mr. Kim later heard the story, he smiled and said, “I thanked God. I thought to myself, “What if my son had heard someone speak badly about me instead?”

He quietly offered another prayer of gratitude, thankful that people remembered not his title, but his life
of service.

Throughout the years, Mr. Kim faithfully served as both President of the Korean Association and President
of the Korean Senior Association. Asked how he looks back on those years of service, he paused for a
moment, his eyes moist with emotion.

“Walking alongside fellow immigrants who missed their homeland and struggled with loneliness has been the greatest blessing of my life. Sharing their burdens and serving them is the legacy I hope to leave to my children.”

As he finished speaking, he looked lovingly toward his wife and smiled. Mr. Kim and Deaconess Young Hee have always centered their lives on their Christian faith. Every morning begins with worship, hymns, and prayer. Mr. Kim lovingly prepares his wife’s meals, quietly demonstrating that true love is found in daily acts of care and devotion. The couple shared another lesson that has shaped their lives. “Loving our neighbors seems possible, but loving our enemies is one of the most difficult teachings of Jesus. We tried, but we realized that such love cannot come from human strength alone. It is God’s love working within us.”

They say that living each day with gratitude for God’s grace has become their greatest source of joy and peace. Throughout the interview, Mr. Kim frequently turned toward his wife with a warm smile. His eyes reflected deep affection and respect for the
woman who had faithfully walked beside him through every season of life. His journey has never been about personal success. Rather, it has been a lifetime devoted to his family, his neighbors, and the Korean community he so dearly loves.

As I concluded our conversation, I found myself reflecting on how one person’s life can profoundly influence an entire community. Mr. Kim never sought recognition or prestige. Instead, he chose a life of humility, sacrifice, gratitude, and unwavering service. His story has become an enduring part of the history of Korean immigrants in Alaska and stands as an inspiring example for future generations.

1948년 3월 15일, 충청남도 태안군 원북면 신두리 1구의 한 농가에서 태어난 김연수(金燕洙, Yon Su Kim) 제22대 한인회장은 평범한 농부의 아들로 성장했다. 그러나 그의 삶은 평범함에 머물지 않았다. 그는 반세기 가까이 알래스카 앵커리지에서 한인사회를 위해 헌신하며 많은 이들의 존경을 받아 온 대표적인 한인 지도자이다.

김 회장은 어린 시절을 이야기할 때마다 아버지에 대한 기억을 먼저 꺼낸다.

“비가 내리면 아버지는 자기 집 비설거지보다 이웃 비설거지를 먼저 도와주셨고, 그 사이 자신의 곡식은 빗물에 젖곤 했다”며 “어린 시절 그런 아버지가 답답하고 싫었지만, 세월이 흐른 지금은 자신도 어느새 같은 길을 걷고 있음을 깨달았다”며 피식 웃으셨다.

그 미소 속에는 나눔과 희생을 몸소 실천했던 아버지에 대한 존경과 감사가 깊이 배어 있었다.

1974년 김영희(본명: Young Hee Song) 권사와 결혼한 그는 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸며 미국행을 결심했다. 당시 펜실베이니아에 살던 처형의 권유로 미국을 향했지만, 일본을 거쳐 도착한 곳은 뜻밖에도 알래스카 앵커리지였다. 당시의 이민 제도와 인연이 맞물리면서 그는 이곳에 정착했고, 그 선택은 그의 인생뿐 아니라 알래스카 한인사회의 역사에도 의미 있는 발걸음이 되었다.

낯선 땅에서의 이민 생활은 결코 쉽지 않았다. 그러나 성실함은 언제나 그의 가장 큰 자산이었다. 영어를 배우던 중 영어교사의 소개로 Mark Air라인에서 빌딩 매니지먼트 업무를 맡게 되었고, 맡은 일을 묵묵히 수행하며 가정을 일구었다. 아내와 함께 큰아들 제임스(James), 둘째 이튼(Ethan), 막내 요셉(Joseph) 세 아들을 훌륭하게 키워 냈으며, 오늘날에는 손녀 둘과 손자 둘을 둔 행복한 할아버지로 살아가고 있다.

그의 삶을 가장 잘 보여 주는 일화도 있다. 둘째 아들 Ethan 씨가 시애틀 코스트코에서 잠시 일하게 되었는데 어느 날, 한 한국인이 “혹시 한국 사람이냐”고 물었다. 그렇다고 답하고 앵커리지에서 왔다고 하자 “앵커리지에서 왔다면 김연수라는 분을 아느냐”고 다시 물었다.

“제 아버지입니다”라는 대답을 듣자 그는 크게 놀라며 “그분은 내가 가장 존경하는 친구다”라고 말했다고 한다.

그 이야기를 들은 김 회장님은 만약에 나쁜 말을 아들이 들었으면 어쩔 뻔했냐며 자신의 이름보다 봉사의 삶을 기억해 준 사람들에게 감사하며 하나님께 조용히 감사의 기도를 드렸다고 회상했다.

김 회장은 한인회장과 노인회장을 역임하며 오랜 세월 한인사회의 화합과 발전을 위해 헌신했다.

그동안의 봉사를 어떻게 생각하십니까? 라는 질문에 그는 잠시 눈시울을 붉히며 담담하게 말했다.

“낯선 이민생활 속에서 고향을 그리워하며 외롭게 살아가는 동포들과 함께 울고 함께 웃으며 살아온 것이 제 인생의 가장 큰 보람”이었다며 “서로의 고달픔을 나누고 섬길 수 있었던 삶은 자녀들에게 부끄럽지 않은 유산으로 남았으면 한다”며 권사님을 마주 보시며 웃으셨다.

김 회장과 김영희 권사는 신앙을 삶의 중심에 두고 살아왔다. 특히 회장님은 권사님과 함께 아침이면 찬양과 예배로 하루를 시작하고 권사님의 식사를 챙기시는 좋은 남편이자 아버지이셨다.

하루는 두 분이 “네 이웃을 사랑하라”는 말씀은 실천할 수 있을 것 같은데 “원수를 사랑하라”는 말씀은 어려운 가르침으로 노력을 하지만 쉽지 않은 말씀이라는 것을 알았는데 시간이 흐르면서 그것은 인간의 힘이 아니라 하나님께서 우리 안에서 이루어 가시는 사랑임을 깨달았다는 고백을 하며 지금도 매일 하나님의 은혜에 감사하며 살아가는 것이 가장 큰 행복이라고 말했다.

인터뷰 내내 김 회장은 아내 김영희 권사를 바라볼 때마다 따뜻한 미소를 지었다. 오랜 세월을 함께 견디고 믿음으로 동행해 온 동반자를 향한 사랑과 존경이 그의 눈빛에 고스란히 담겨 있었다.

그의 삶은 자신만을 위한 성공이 아니라 가족을 위해, 이웃을 위해, 그리고 한인사회를 위해 묵묵히 걸어온 봉사의 역사였다.

김연수 회장의 삶을 돌아보며 필자는 한 사람의 인생이 한 공동체를 얼마나 따뜻하게 변화시킬 수 있는지를 다시 생각하게 되었다. 그는 화려한 업적을 앞세우기보다 섬김과 희생을 실천했고, 감사와 긍정의 마음으로 매일을 살아왔다.

이러한 삶은 알래스카 한인 이민사의 소중한 자산이며, 후배들에게 오래도록 기억될 아름다운 본보기가 될 것이다.
